First, I'll state I'm serious about the question so I'm not after ways to deflect farts.
I love riding and I've spent $85 on molded ear plugs. They work to some extent. But the wind beats me up after hours of 85+.
Last night I said I had to do something to solve this, so I cut up a pair of woolen socks and will try glueing these pieces into my helmet in order to cover my ears more. But if others have something that works, I'd love to learn what it is.
And no, slowing down isn't an option.

PS Edit post. I've already tried every type of soft ear plug out there.

OK some possible approaches:

1) Change your helmet - some are much quieter than others.

2) Modify the bike so you don't get so much wind directed straight at your helmet visor.

I have some custom-made earplugs and they work really well, along with a double-bubble screen. The stock screen sent all the blast straight up the helmet from below, and now while my head isn't in still air, the noise is much reduced, even at 90mph.

I'm about to change helmets myself, as the current one (an Arai bought at a dealer closedown sale two years ago) is apparently more suited to a female head shape!

At least that way I'll be able to remove it without having to re-attach my ears afterwards.

So in summary, it's a combination of reducing the airflow to your helmet and finding a quieter one in the first instance.

yeah, same problem here. The Tiger makes it worse with the stock and touring windscreen. I have both an Arai Profile and recently got an Arai Condor when I was at the IOM. The Condor is a european head shape which had a tighter fit around the ears, effectively closing my ears but the roar is still pretty irritating and wearing.

I have been wearing Shure earbuds with the Zune and use the back ground music to cure the roaring.

I've tried various shooters earplugs but certainly not all of them, I would look there...

Ditto what tbiller said, it's the windshield that's making the noise. My Trophy was the same way, either try a different IE shorter windshield or taller bars to raise your self up out of the breakover point. Shoei RF1000's are fairly quiet helmets but I'd try a different windshield first as that's the main culprit

Thanks guys. I'll try anything. I've noticed success when I stuff a cloth up into the helmet all around my neck. Gets a little stuffy in there in warm weather. If I put my hand along the lower front of the helmet to redirect the wind, this works the best but not the ideal long term solution.
If I come up with something, I'll pass it on. I'm very determined at this point. As I said, my next attempt is to glue pieces of wool socks into the ear area in an older SHOEI that I'll use as a test model. That should block the wind from screaming by.
I've just grabbed a set of hearing protection guards from work and I'll tear them apart and try to attach portions into my helmet. Worth a try.
PS stevent, I've got the RF1000 and love it. I've also just put a lower screen on my bike. Maybe I'm just a sensitive guy.

.... hey whisperin' - so is it noisier than the Sprint was?

My 1st line of defence up to about 70mph is a neck tube.I have a polar fleece one that seems to seal fairly well between my neck and helmet. If its too warm for it or I'm on a longer trip or going faster I use disposable foam industrial earplugs. The combination of the 2 is very effective.

Grant,
A neck tube sounds perfect! Where can I get one? As for the Tiger being noisier, nope, both the same. Once you get speed, the wind is tough and they are both fast bikes. The Sprint demands respect and the Tiger gets, "What the heck was that?" as it blows by 'em.

PS Edit. Oh, those neck tubes! Nope, got some already. I was actually thinking a "tube" that would block the wind under the helmet. I'm thinking I'll add a piece to the front of the helmet that hangs down to redirect the wind. I'm going to solve this for sure.

PPS 2nd edit. I just found this site. Might be perfect.

That's because not many of them ride around 85mph Mangles :-D

Like they said, change your helmet and/or adjust your screen.

Now that I'm severely follicularly challenged, I've grown to enjoy the wind in my ears...after all, we are on motorcycles!!

Ahhh..........the wind in my ears and bugs in my teeth: Jim
