not really bike related - but hopefully someone here can answer.

I have recently bought a new diesel work utility (SUV?) after years of running a petrol vehicle.

Anyway - I did the unmentionable today.I got distracted and somehow nearly filled my tank with petrol before realising my mistake. What a prat

Short story is that I now have 40litres (10 gals) of a mix which must be about 20% diesel/80% premium petrol.

My feeling is I should be able to use it in my son's car.Probably diluted a bit - maybe 1/4 or 1/2 tank at a time.

Any reason why I shouldnt do it?

DONT DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DRAIN IT OFF, CLEAN THE TANK, REFILL AND KEEP YOUR FINGERS CROSSED.

HAVE SEEN THIS MANY TIMES AT A 4WD SERVICE I WORK AT AND OUR TECHS. REMOVE THE TANK AND CLEAN IT,AND THE FUEL LINES BEFORE REFITTING TO THE VEHICLE.

A REPLACEMENT ENGINE CAN BE AS MUCH AS AUS. $12000 IN A MODERN NEW VEHICLE.

HOPE THIS HELPS. ROD

Rod,

I have drained it out of my Ute and filled it with Diesel and it's all sorted.

The question is - should I run the mix in a petrol engine. If I put about 1/4 tank at a time it will be diluted down to about 5% diesel/95% petrol which I would think would blow a bit of smoke at worst.

HI Grant,
you would want to check this and not go by what I say being a not very techy type.

But I would imagine seeing that the deisel is a more unrefined product that 5% deisel and 95% petrol mix would be fine but just give your sons car a bit of an upper cylinder lube.

But don't take my word for it, I could be wrong.

It's not worth the risk Ice, could cause premature ignition (backfiring) and put undue strain on the engine.

I use diesel as a cleaning fluid, engine parts but you've got a lifes time supply there.

There is a 'Mr Sucky' that has a mobile pump that goes around gas station to gas station here for motorists who has made the same mistake, he's contracted to the AA (Automobile Assoc. not the drink people). They may buy it off you if you have one in Whangarei. They reprocess it. Failing that write it off as a mistake.

What is your son's car? In the old days, things would burn a little kerosene or diesel. Now, with FI, catalysts, and all, you may have trouble. I did finish the lawn mowing with diesel once, and then added more gasoline to that.
