Well, golfer is gonna love this but I'll say it anyway. If you're male my vote is for the Twin Cities. If you're female probably Madison, Wisconsin. The Cities is growing quickly but not to fast. They are on the brink of so much recreation north, east and west, lets see Iowa is south (who did I just pi** off? Hey, Iowa has RAGBRAI and thats a good thing). Housing isn't cheap but decent places can be found. The job market is robust, you didn't say what you're looking to do for a job. Pay is decent. The people take a little getting used to but are pleasent enough when you get to know them. They have art galleries and resturants galore and have more theater seats per capita than any other metro area except New York and you're only 2 hours away from true wilderness recreation. Also some great bars and clubs so that's covered. Lots and lots of great m/c or road bicycling pavement in the Cities, nearby countryside and Wisconsin is only 15 minutes from St. Paul where they have all that great riding too only fewer people. Great airport with access to just about everywhere. Really just too much to cover
Why Madison for women. The metro area isn't as big as the Cities although the same advantages regarding recreation near the city and women have wage equity with men, that's not my opinion that's Forbes and Business Week's opine's. Madison's proximity to Milwaukee and Chicago should be a plus. I'm just not as familiar with Madison. What makes this area so great is water, Missouri has water but not like we have it, you want to be near it and I'm not talking about saltwater. Just coming out of college, you're going to be part of the political war over water that's going to be fought in your lifetime. Seriously oil ain't even gonna be on the radar when your 50.
If you want or need grad shcool, either city will give you access to one of the best public ivy's in the country. You could do a lot worse than Minneapolis/St. Paul or MadTown, has that name for a reason.
And finally to tba-golfer, I live in Wisc., one brother in Virginia and one brother in the service in Europe. All the rest of my extended family live in Minnesota. My parents and grandparents are dead. I would have a Minnesota birth certificate but the hospital was in North Dakota. So very like our good friends in Tennesee who don't "have" to live there, were Volunteers.
