Did anyone see the the shoddy way the British government treats servicemen and ex servicemen, compared to the US, a soldier wounded in Afganistan was flown back to the UK, taken to the A+E at a normal NHS hospital, given Crutches and sent home with serious back injuries, the UK government have closed all Military hospitals to "save money"! Our wounded soldiers are being treated in mixed NHS wards. At a loss once again with the UK.
Cliky shoddy treatment

They are treated in Selly Oak hospital. Thats my local hospital. Its due for closure as a big new Hospital is being built a mile away. The Qeen Elizabeth.
Yes its shoddy. One guy was abused by a Moslem patient a year or so ago as Military personnel disdn't even have their own ward!!!!
It stinks. It also stinks that some Polish guy employed as a "Heritage Warden" (whatever Mickey mouse job that is) can tell a British serviceman he cant film on Trafalgar square! What the fark. Is this our country or what?
It also stinks that Gurkas dont get the pension that other servicemen get.
It also stinks that Harrods wont let serving or ex personnel in wearing Uniform. Thats what happens when our businesses are sold to people with names like Fayed! when we are at war with people with names like Fayed!
Its a messed up world and thats for sure.
But most of all those veterans were injured in a war to ensure a certain Mrs Thatcher could distract us from the fact she was putting us all out of work, and selling our nation to the highest bidder in the spurious name of competition, and another war fought for simply no good reason at all other than to destabilise further an already dangerous powder keg of a region!
That is the worst of it!
Oh and yes WW2 may be 60 years ago or more but maybe if this country hadn't been paying back the US govt loan until last year!!!! A loan for recovery this nation was forced to take after our great allies refused to aid us right after the war! Maybe we could have afforded to keep at least one Military hospital open!
Not that I hold a grudge or anything but my delve into history has convinced me that whilst the American people might truly be our great allies and freinds the American govt has never realy been so.
Hell only two more days till I'm 40 and I realy have become a grumpy old git! :wink: :razz:

Yeah and they didn't pay for all that tea they spilt into Boston harbour either, and they stole Manhatten, and the London Bridge. Gee is nothing sacred around here ?

Sorry I dont want this to get sidetracked into a US/GB thing, but I would like comment on the Article from my International freinds, seems too important to just let this go, with the news of 1 British soldier killed and three seriously wounded again yesterday, what treatment awaits them on return to the UK. I have written to my MP voiceing a complaint and concern and would urge all other UK readers to do the same.

What makes you think the U.S. soldiers are treated any better by our govt. They talk a good game but behind the scenes they are cutting benifits.

Sorry you never saw the programme, the comparisons were stark, lots of the programme was filmed in the USA, I felt so sorry for the guys who were cast itno the wilderness, they are battle shocked and trumatised/wounded, and on return to a UK hospital are made to remove their uniforms so they dont offend musim patients at the place they are to be treated, they need support from others who have similar experience, this is proved to help, and is what happens in the US military hospitals of which there are 87, here there are non now and they are treated appalingly. I am not talking about financial support, they should just be treated with dignity and understanding instead of what happens now. It also showed British soldiers in uniform being removed from Harrods, (they were not in a large group,just singly trying to buy something) a major shop in London because they were in British army uniform, by foriegn born security guards, they were also told that they were not allowed to gather in Trafalgar square by a Polish security official, what has the UK come to, are the public ashamed of our soldiers, should we remove Lord Nelson from his column as he is a military hero. I give up.

"Hurrah For The Life Of A Soldier"
Tommy
By Rudyard Kipling, 1892
I went into a public- 'ouse to get a pint o' beer,
The publican 'e up an sez, "We serve no red-coats here."
The girls behind the bar they laughed an' giggled fit to die,
I outs into the street again an' to myself sez I:
O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy go away";
But it's "Thank you, Mister Atkins," when the band begins to play-
The band begins to play, my boys, the band begins to play,
O it's "Thank you Mr Atkins," when the band begins to play.
I went into a theatre as sober as could be,
They gave a drunk civilian roo, but 'adn't none for me;
They sent me to the gallery or round the music-'alls,
But when it comes to fighting', Lord! They'll shove me in the stalls!
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy wait outside";
But it's "Special train for Atkins," when the trooper's on the tide-
The troopship's on the tide, my boys, the troopship's on the tide,
O it's "Special train for Atkins," when the trooper's on the tide.
Yes, makin' mock o' uniforms that guard you while you sleep
Is cheaper than them uniforms, an' they're starvation cheap;
An' hustlin' drunken soldiers when they're goin' large a bit
Is five times better business than paradin' in full kit.
Then it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy 'ow's yer soul?"
But it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll-
The drums begin to roll, my boys, the drums begin to roll,
O it's " Thin red line of 'eroes," when the drums begin to roll.
We aren't no thin red 'eroes, nor we aren't no blackguards too,
But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you;
An' if sometimes our conduck isn't all your fancy paints,
Why single men in barricks don't grow into plaster saints;
While it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy fall be'ind,"
But it's "Please to walk in front, sir," when there's trouble in the wind-
There's trouble in the wind, my boys, there's trouble in the wind,
O it's "Please to walk in front, sir," when there's trouble in the wind.
You talk o' better food for us, an' schools, an' fires, an' all:
We'll wait for extry rations if you treat us rational.
Don't mess about the cook-room slops, but prove it to our face
The Widow's Uniform is not the soldier-man's disgrace.
For it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Chuck 'im out, the brute!"
But it's "Saviour of 'is country" when the guns begin to shoot;
An' it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' anything you please;
An' Tommy ain't a bloomin' fool - you bet that Tommy sees!
Note:
It was the Duke of Wellington who coined the popular nickname Thomas (or Tommy) Atkins, for the ordinary soldier. In 1843, whilst Commander-in-Chief, he was asked to come up with a 'typical' soldier's name. Thinking back to his first campaign in the Low Countries in the 1790s he remembered a badly wounded, but stoical, soldier he had encountered - Thomas Atkins.
The Widow's Uniform - after Prince Albert's death, Queen Victoria was known as the Widow at Windsor and soldiers were known as the Widow's Sons who wore the Widow's uniform.

I'm sorry our governments aren't always what they're supposed to be, and I certainly don't mean to be sticking my nose into a UK issue, but I think the treatment of your vets is rotten. Whether you agree with the war or not, these guys and gals are following orders and are doing the job they signed on to do. I will not get into an argument on the middle east, but you can bet your sweet bippie and I will defend the troops and the rights they deserve. If any of you see the moslem that asked one of your fine soldiers to remove his uniform, please ask him to visit the U.S. and let me know when and where he's coming in. I think we can explain things to him.
Regardless of past or present governmental errors, I have always had the highest respect for the people of the UK and their armed forces. Your people definitely deserve better than the treatment they are receiving.

Here's a modest proposal. If you are offended by the sight of a particular nation's uniformed servicemembers, DON'T MOVE THERE!
Give 'em he!!, doodledog. I'm right behind you (which is where I belong on this issue, since it's not my country).
Is there any country on earth that really treats their veterans the way they should be treated?
