The military seems to get a lot of criticism but hardly any praise so it is nice to see them appreciated for a dangerous job.

Wow. :gpst:

My old army unit(3-504 PIR) had 2 Presidential citations awarded in WWII. Nothing since.

A great honor, bestowed on the SAS, not from the President, but from the soldiers and officers in the field who witnessed their actions and made the recommendations for the award. Awesome.

New Zealand should be very proud. Well done.

Good on them.On t.v. last night we had the first in a short series on our NZSAS.50 air-force,army and navy blokes trying out over a 10 day selection period for spots on a 9 month SAS training camp.5 did not make it through the first day and only 6 made it to the end of the 10 days. Very little sleep and minimal food. Did not appear to be any co-operation between the course participants and no encouragement from the officers running the selection course. It all had to come from within themselves. One guy made it to within 10 minutes of the very last route march and his fate was the same as the others that didn't make it ,onto the back of a unimog and away - hardly anything spoken.I was truly shocked and amazed at how hard core it all was. Also some excellent history. Our SAS is based on the WW2 British long distance desert group that had many kiwis in it, that alot of historians credit with the turning of the war in North Africa. Some excellent film footage from their training etc. Maybe other countries elite soldiers are in a similar league, probably are in which case you too can be as proud of them as I now am of the NZSAS.

I am sure that they are and we should all be proud of them, but the SAS types being who and what they are, we rarely hear of the outstanding and important stuff that they do.

Yes Mkchev, I saw that TV show too, pretty gruelling, no quarter given there in selection, 6 out of 50 military applicants from other regiments made it to selection, then they have 9 months further training and could be kicked out at anytime if they fail any step. The selection procedures literally drive them into the ground.

Oddly enough back to back on another channel was a British SAS TV programme but this one had a novelty, it has been running for several weeks and they took about 20 civilians from all walks of life but mostly keen and fit types, and put them thru a token 10 weeks of SAS training, they also failed about 14 for various reasons during the course. Took them to Borneo for jungle training and somewhere in the Middle East for desert training. However all would have failed selection I think if it were for real.

On another note, I am not sure if this is well known but something Mkchev reminded me of, not only are NZ soldiers in both British and Australian SAS but vice versa.

Even today in Afghanistan there are still Australian, British and New Zealand SAS troops all doing rotating tours and of course US Special Forces.
