The title of this thread is a quote from a friend that rides a Harley. I was telling him about my ticket for 95mph in a 55mph zone and he said " I got mine up to 70 one time just to see what it felt like". I had a hard time not laughing and just kind of made some grunting noises. I didn't even have the heart to tell him I had actually been up to 149 based on the speedo.

There's a right and wrong tool for any job. My wife insisted we buy a minivan and I cringed.. but that thing is great for trips to Home Depot. I like Harley riding (and so do many closet Harley riders on this board). I'd be scared on one of them at over 70 myself. Skinny little front tire, feet hanging way out in front, useless "skid-lid" where the helmet should be.

They are made for cruising between stoplights or apparently blurping around my neighborhood at 7:00 am Sunday AM. when I'm trying to sleep.

Scot,

You will get a laugh about the licence plate on the Ural:

If I ever get a ticket for going 70+ on the Ural, I will frame it.

You are probably right Tbirdnz.
Rated top speed is 65mph, but I think that is going downhill with a spinacker up.

The first week I had it, I ran out of juice on the freeway on the way home from work, so I do have 'freeway loitering' experience.

What is the point in a moderrn bike with a huge engine and price tag that wont do 70? It beggars belief.

If I want to ride a bike that will struggle to get to over 70 I ride a real vintage machine. The fun the pride the oily fingernails the sense of history of preserving the past its all there and marvelous. I just dont see the point in something that was made yesterday but performs worse than something made 40 years ago. Its a waste of money and ultimately an overpriced tarts handbag, a pastiche of the real thing.

I want my modern bikes modern thanks and my vintage bikes vintage. I dont want modern bikes with vintage performance thats just plain daft.

OK rant over ! :-D

That is crazy. I had a 2001 Harley SuperGlide (1450cc) and had it to 110, with more available if I wanted it. I porbably could have reached at least 120 if I would have pushed it. I now own an '05 XL883 and have had it to 100 a couple of times. Anyone that tells you a Harley can't do 70 is pulling your leg for sure...
