stevent,
i don't think we (most of us) have any clue what is happening on that continent to the poor masses. i confess, i live with my head in the sand when it comes to this topic. i sometimes wish i could be a more involved, better person, but then i get overwhelmed with how much needs to be changed. that's when i go for a ride on my bike.
as stated many times, this human comedy is a puzzle.
ps loved the movie, by the way. great performances by all.

Diamonds, coffee, chocolate. All bad. All bad...
I don't think you can buy anything these days that isn't dripping with human misery. Local crafts I suppose.
The movies ok. Hollywoodized of course but well worth a look if you rent or dl it. Second run prices. I found it similar to Babel although more violent. Like that one with Clooney or the one with Fiennes (can't remember the names) they have that measured quality that comes with big money productions. Afterwards you might want to find out more about the subject by looking up some documentaries that spare you the love story but are rather harder to swallow because of the politics.

The economics of the diamond/gem stone/precious metals industry have always been of interest to me...
Diamonds are especially an instance of supply being tightly controlled by a very small cartel, while demand and price are set by faith, in essence.
Gem stone quality diamonds are chock a block around the world. Russia, Canada, Oz could easily flood the market, which would effectively kill it. They choose to opt along with the RSA Debeers cartel, which controls all aspects of the trade, from mining to cutting and polishing, distribution, and wholesale supply/pricing.
Given all this, I still ponied up huge over the years for "ice" for the ex... :hammer:
Sigh.
:-D

I seem to remember reading an article some time back regarding the Argyle mine in Australia, that if the worlds stocks of diamonds were all released to the market, they would be as common as and of similar value to window glass.

Yep, that is exactly the case, Wombat.
You talk about mastery in controlling supply, and "creating" demand!
(As a rule, I generally don't think demand, in a classic economic sense CAN be created, but this may well be an exeption.)
Not all is rosy in the diamond world however. DeBeers has been less than successful in generating both sales to men, and inculcating a number of cultures with marketing notions of "A Diamond is forever" and "How much is your love worth" and other tripe.
Still, (speaking out of both sides of my mouth,) as I said, the ex Mrs. tba-golfer is well blinged in ice...not that I'm bitter, or dwell on it at all...
:-D
