The database server that drives the majority of my critical databases kept running all day today but at an impaired state. On this site, the larger database tables ended up being locked; affecting primarily the forums on TriumphRat.Net.

Normally my mobile phone is paged when there are server issues, or loss of critical server applications. In this case, all of the applications continued to function, and the automated system never reported an issue. I run a customized *nix operating system on my servers that does great under extreme activity, but it actually never went down - so I was never called. That's technology for ya.

Anywho, after I got to my hotel and got settled (on the road visiting clients this week) I discovered the situation and resolved it in roughly 30 minutes.

To my knowledge, no data was lost. I didn't have to restore from backup, just repair several key database parts.

The cause was attributed to an automated backup routine that has outgrown it's usefulness. It's not necessarily because it's inferior but just can't handle the volume from this site any longer. TriumphRat.Net represents a significant amount of data and content. Managing the volume of data involved continues to be one of my top challenges.

The action items I'm going to implement won't be something anyone will notice here.

My apologies for the inconvenience.

...... thanks for the update Shawn.

I have read your description of what went wrong twice and my head is starting to spin - you are a clever cookie.

Thanks again for your good work - we certainly feel like something is missing when the site is down.

cheers, Grant

A day without ratnet is like a day without coffee. There I was at work all day with nothing to do. What's said here stays here right? Right? :

Uh...yeah, that's what I would have done too....back up the dashbord and prioritize the nexus port...then ummm re-align the server modum with the back-up data base...errr

Good job Shawn..(ahem)
