Stop using the wax. Take the front sprocket cover off and look at what has collected in that area. Oil is the way to go. Oil does cause more cleanup, but it is not that big a deal.

Sorry to disagree with Oldnnumb but, wax does not throw off the chain all over the bike and the way to clean it up is, Yes the old favourite WD40, spray it onto the chain and rub all the old wax off with a rag, when clean which only takes a couple of minutes, re apply fresh wax, by all means take off the sprocket cover and clean out the residue in the same way as if you leave it too long it will hold grit and rub on the chain, you only have to do the cleaning thing once or twice a year I do it mid summer and again at the start of winter and it keeps it all in tip top condition, course you could always just fit a scottoiler instead but I have used wax for a long time without any problems and without oil festering my back wheel and the left leg of my leathers/textile riding gear.

Do You call Kerosene Parrafin in Nova Scotia? Whatever you call it, it works well when cleaning the chain with a parts brush every few hundred miles. I use Bel-Ray non-fling chain lube with good results.

It's my understanding that you don't want to use WD40 or anything else with a solvent in it on an O-ring chain because the solvent can damage the rubber O-rings. Kerosene is the way to go for cleaning the chain. For lube I use Honda HP chain lube.

Not according to WD 40 - they say its safe.
Solvent could get past and wash out the grease from behind the rings if you spray it on directly.
Kerosene is the safest - though personally I use WD40. I woudl never use anything other than chain wax on my o ring chain

I must agree with the wax people. I've used wax on my bikes for a long time with great success. I've used it on my TBS since new and got almost 20,000 miles out of my original chain and sprocket. And with no "smegma" build up inside the cover.
I clean the chain with a rag and diluted Citra-Solv. I never spray the solution directly on the chain, so it never gets a chance to get into the rings. I also use a brush to get anything the rag might not have reached.
