Good observation hidesert, I think after Chirac people are paying attention to this election, it's too important for them to allow anyone just to get in.

Do you think countries should have compulsory voting ?

compulsory voting

It's good to see some people are passionate about politics.
If you don't vote you forfeit you right to criticise.

Tbird, my gut reaction is that if you have to twist someone's arm to get them to vote, the republic is probably better off without their opinion anyway. But my mind is far from made up. Some form of compulsory voting might make it harder for special interest groups to swing elections when their views are obviously contrary to the desires of the majority.

Given secret ballots, you really can't force people to VOTE, you can only try to force them to come to a voting booth. And the link you gave mentions "swinging voters." Do we really want that sort of people gathering at the polling stations? What if I have to bring my children with me? What kind of behavior might they be exposed to? Won't anybody think about the children!!!???!!!

You'll never see it in the US. No one could possibly come up with a scheme that would get enough support for it to be enacted.

Obviously, the real answer is to start eating cheese, fattened goose livers, and wearing berets.

You could be right there hidesert, those that don't vote get what they deserve.

I notice in that link that Austria used to be compulsory but then changed to optional. Do you know why that was ?

The French seem to have real candidates with different views.
We in Britain have two 'manufactured' candidates whos views are so similar as to be the same. This may be why we British voters are so apathetic. What happened to the politicians with ideals and passion?

I fart in France's general direction. Required voting no. It would be expensive to enforce and silly. Nothing worse than an uninformed voter. If voting was required I would vote for the candidate that promised to make it volunitary, even if he was a democrat.

Thats pretty darn good turnout. The govt complains,( or looks forward to low turn out here in the states), about low turn out at the polls but in all truth if we had an 85% turnout, it would close the polls. They dont have enough machines for that.

The French have always been passionate about politics... very unrepresentative of Europe as a whole. This is because they don't drink enough.
