So, I've just finished trolling around the internet, reading up on BMW's new F800ST. I think they have hit on a segment of motorcycling distinctly lacking in this type & capacity of motorcycle. And by all accounts, they have a winner. Smart looking, beautifully functional, and efficient (claimed 4.4l/100kms @ 120 kph, or about 64 mpg!).

One down side might be the price compared to the Kawasaki ER6, Suzuki 650 Bandit, or Yamaha FZ6. But then its overall quality is likely superior.

Triumph have a terrific bike on which to base a nice middleweight sport-tourer: the Daytona 675.

I've never ridden one, but from what I've read, it's a fantastic package, with a very strong motor and great chassis. With Triumphs' sound engineering, they could easily target this segment and BMW in particular. And since much of the expensive engineering has already been done, the retail price could be kept to a reasonable level.

I think it would appeal to quite a few riders, especially those who would like to tour but don't want (or need) a large displacement bike, and still have something that is competently sporty.

Come on Triumph, do it!!

Cheers, Mark.

I was reading in the latest MSL mag that BMW are planning a model to challenge the 675. Ironic eh?
