Just heard from my daughters husband. He bought a Kaw. 250 Ninja. For the price I can't fault him. Now there are both his and my late brother's in the family. I hope he will break the engine in right. When my younger bro. died and left the bike for the older bro. we brought it out here so I could ride it around up to the breakin mileage. The 1st 400 miles you are limited to something like 35 or 40 mph. and then only 55 or so up to 800. It is somewhat hyporcritical, but I worry a lot about other people riding on the freeway, 'specially the son in law. I keep reminding myself the the older bro. is the one who taught me and has years of experience traveling all across the country on old Indians and HD's. He is also the one who got a dirt bike and said he would never ride in traffic again because of the idiots.

I know what you mean... my 17 year old son wants to get a bike and I have the same worries. I can teach him everything he need to know and make him take rider training but ultimately he's out there on his own using his own skills against the same idiots we face. It's a tough call.

I think that the freeway is probably safer than the residential and rural roads. There is no one to turn left in front of you, and the traffic is all headed the same direction.

It's all a matter of risk management. If you don't want to take that task, it's OK, you just shouldn't ride on the street. Of course, your emotional proximity affects your perspective on it (as it should).

Last year Bike magazine ran a feature that showed evidence that the highest incidence of serious accidents involving motorcycles were on days with good weather, dry surface, on good fast 'A' roads (not motorways - statistics show they tend to be safer). Just the kind of conditions where a rider may be tempted to 'go for it' round the fast twisties and on overtakes. I will put my hands up and say - I have been that rider. Nowadays I tend to be a little more 'canny'. I suppose all we can try to do is pass on the experience & knowledge that tells us that sometimes it is when things feel safest - that they can be at their most dangerous.

Best,

L
