Motorcyclist milimetres from death
17 April 2007, 15:34

A motorcycle rider has told how he was just milimetres from death; when his throat was slashed wide open after he rode his bike into barbed wire.

Doctors say 25 year old Shaun Link was lucky to survive the accident at South Wootton near King’s Lynn, where he'd been riding his bike on private land. The barbed wire was suspended between two gate posts, and Shaun didn't see it until it was too late. After narrowly escaping death, he says he'll never ride his bike again and is warning others to take more care when riding off-road.
"Take more care when riding off road!"

Ouch, reminds me of the a**holes who used to string piano wire between trees in an area that I used to offroad.

I hope they have charged the idiot who did that. Utter stupidity, that wouldn't have kept any stock from escaping if that was the original intention.

I recently saw a 4WD take out two gate posts of a supermarket carpark which wasn't actually open because of a single chain across the posts that didn't have a sign hanging from it. Driver claimed he didn't see it because of the sun until the last moment.

That happens with regularity with snowmobiles where I'm originally from. We had to hang all kinds of signs from our high-tension electric fence to make sure that it was perfectly visible in case someone tried to ride through what used to be an open area.

My only questions is:

where he'd been riding his bike on private land
His private land, or someone else' private land?

lucky guy.

I see he claims he had sought and received permission from the landowner to ride there. Just wait and see, he will end up suing the landowner next.

Certainly a very lucky escape, most landowners have insurance to cover for accidents on their land by third parties. Here is it part of farm insurance.

However the rider's 'stressing just how motorcycles can be dangerous' is a bit of an over reaction to how the incident was caused. The wire could have been walked into at night or a by a farm quad, land buggy or any open topped vehicle.
Just absolute stupidity that such a wire was strung between two gate posts like that, a definite trap.

Here barbed wire is very little used if atall on farms, I've got none on mine, everyone uses electric fences, that can give a nice zap.

I have a small moto-x track in one of my paddocks at the moment used by my sons but come winter it will be rolled up and left to recover.
