Is looking up!

So I was getting my drivers license renewed today. I'm starting my bike and this rather goth-ish young man (judging by the multiple face piercings) approaches me and first off asks where the other side of my swingarm is. I tell him its called a single sided swingarm and it is designed to be like that. To which he replies "doesn't it handle weird?" I say nope, as long as that big ass nut holding the back wheel stays put.

So, to the part about the future of youth.

He then goes on to explain how he just got a "Ninja" a couple of weeks ago. Scared, I ask which one and he tells me its his first bike so he got the 250! Dumbfounded. I was thinking he was going to say a ZX-10R or something silly like that. He then said something about also wanting to wait for the MSF course before doing much street riding! Hooray for nose, lip and eyebrow rings!

I congratulated him on his purchase and wished him luck and off he went.

It is nice to know that there are some kids out there who don't think that a liter gixxer is the perfect first bike.

My daughters and their friends are all goths, looks like a witches coven in here when they're all hanging out. They all seem to be decent and polite kids, goes to show you cant let appearences fool you.

I walked into my local dealership the other day and behind the counter was a face I recognised. He was one of the young people who came to a motorcycle project I ran as part of my youthwork about ten years ago. Back then he was a daft kid who loved bikes but was like many in danger of using them as a tool for pissing off the public (hmm maybe not so different from me! ) and getting himself a record before he had a licence. Now hes working at a big dealership and giving good advice on aftermarket parts to people like me. Yes there is plenty of hope. We were all young daft and certainly in my case pretty antisocial once!

Extra Motorcycle: dya mean the one outside?
It's encouraging when kids demonstrate good sense and maturity - it makes the effort of nuturing them worthwhile. However, it also makes me wish I'd shown a little more of the same a little sooner myself.

Oh well, such is life...

I would have invited him to go ride with me.
If us "lifers" don't impress upon the new riders how to enjoy a bike correctly, they gravitate to the stuntaboyz crowd.
