i have on tv some gas pumps have weird nozzle thingys on them - does anyone know if they are on all pumps everywhere or just some brands or just some states

and for me - what about NY maine vermont and new hampshire

It sounds as though you're referring to the accordion-like rubber tube that surrounds the nozzle. It's intended to capture fumes that escape when dispensing fuel. It makes adding gas to your bike a bit awkward but it's not really an inconvenience.

You can pull it back to see the tip of the nozzle and the fuel
going into the tank.

PITA but no big deal after you do it a few times.

Welcome to the bane of California's gas station regulation.
(Other than the price gouging. It costs so much to transport the gas the whole twenty miles from the refineries, after all.)
I hate, hate, hate those pump covers and sometimes think I took to touring just to get away from the stupid things once in a while.

many of the gas stations here that have the accordian gizmo, also have one of those adaptor thingies...ask the attendant. some stations have them around here, some don't.
