...Stephen Plowden doesn't seem to think so according to his report on high performance motorbikes (Yahoo Link). The 65 mph could be a typo though as it's not mentioned on the BBC News site.

What are your thoughts?

(ps couldn't find this else where on here, sorry if this is a duplicate though  )

I haven't read the article yet, but to answer your question, absolutely YES.

Insert boilerplate rant here (with enthusiasm!).

For what it's worth (probably nothing), the highway speed limit in Austria is 130kph (80 mph), and it's 75 in much of the US. Is 65 honestly the highest speed limit in the UK?

Absolutely not! The speed limit on our motorways is 70 mph (why is why I think the 65 mph could be a typo). But legally we can go 10% + 2 mph above the limit, and so we can't get a ticket for going 79 mph in a 70 zone. This is to allow for any speedo errors. In reality, like most place in the world I guess, if you are going under 80-85 mph everything is going to be overtaking you!

The 65mph thing isn't a typo - this chap is some slow down fascist from the Safer Speeds campaign (or some such do-gooder organisation). He also suggested that bikes should be banned from town centres as they are a danger to pedestrians and refused to accept that a pedestrian could be responsible for an accident involving a bike. Oh yeah, he also says that we're worse polluters than cagers.

He doesn't seem to want cars top speeds limiting, however and never mentions the warming potential of, say, a Bugatti Veyron

Just occurred to me - what exactly are the BMF and MAG doing while the govt. are listening to this fool?

Dept. for Transport have ruled out fitting 'Intelligent Speed Limiters' to bikes, but that sounds like political weaseling to me. Wait for them to limit top speeds without ISA.

You need speed on tap for safe overtaking, you don't want it to take ever and a day to reach a max speed of 65mph.

When you compare statistics you should compare them with the accident rate of 50 years ago and the relationship of the number of bikes and riders.

Both modern bikes and roads are now safer, there are already laws for idiots who would do a super bikes maximum speed on highways.

From the article: "Many "superbikes" with large engines have devices that restrict top speeds to 186 mph (300 kph). The committee did not suggest a top speed limit."

Er... ok then. I promise not to go over 186mph on my trusty Speedy. Thank you. Good night.

Come on guys, let's not get too paranoid... This is civil service speak for:

Reginald to Algernon as they are cruising down to the South Coast one Sunday afternoon in their open topped Morgan: "Goodness, that motorcycle went by terribly fast"
"You know, you're absolutely right Reggie dear. Something ought to be done about them."
"It really should. Let's write a White Paper on it first thing Monday when we get back to the office."
"Absoluuuutely, Reggie dear. Did I say how much that gingham check suits you?"

We'll all end up riding Royal Enfields :-x

It's time to take up bungee jumping before the MPs ban that too.
