Remember back when nobody took 'em seriously an' thought they were just carp (well, you know, flip the letters). Then they started offering outrageous (by Detroit standards) warranties and people started realizin' they were for real.

So now UM announces its 07 lineup with a THREE YEAR WARRANTY. Not bad. I'll admit, one of the reasons I bought a brand new Triumph was the warranty (I really hate the depreciation that happens on new vehicles, and the warranty is the only real attraction).

It'll be interesting to watch.

A friend had one of the first 100,000 mile/ten year warranty vehicles. He said that the warranty was honored with no question at all. In fact, they had replaced almost everything under the hood! :roflmoa2:

His biggest aggravation was being without the vehicle so much of the time.

It looks as though the quality has improved greatly and Honda/Toyota are going to be in for some serious competition.

Mrs. Welshrob has a Kia Rio. They`ve had a 3 year warranty for quite a while out here. She bought it brand new about 2 years ago, it`s now done 50,000km`s and hasn`t missed a beat. It was $13,000 drive away, which at the time made it the cheapest new car in Australia. It has all the bells and whistles, aircon, electric windows, airbags, cd player. I can`t say a bad word about it. Mind you, I don`t have drive it every day!

:-D

Ya, Kia was rated one of the most unreliable vehicles for 2006. They have that warranty for a reason.

I think not my friend!

Here`s a link to an article about the 2006 JD Powers survey, cosidered THE definitive automotive survey, on vehicle reliability. For those who can`t be bothered to read it, the Toyota Echo won it, and the Kia and Hyundai were runners up.

JD Powers survey

Amongst the worst were the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Chevy Blazer.

In the UK, Hyundai has a standard 5 year warranty. Kia is advertising its new car (the Ceed, or something like that), with a 7 year warranty.

My understanding is that Hyundais have suffered from weak transmission, but I've not heard anything untoward about Kia. Other than I drove a Kia Sedona rental car and it was the worst car I have ever driven, by a long way.
