I have been watching a DVD set of 11'th Hour, a British made for TV series staring Patrick Stewart, as I am a big Patrick Stewart fan. It could have been a decent show if not for the "important messages" that began popping up as the episodes progressed.
The Patrick's character is a government scientists sent out to investigate man-made catastrophes like virus out-breaks and such. Later the episodes turn to global warming and creation of Uranium by the government (so they can plant evidence on the next Middle Eastern country they wish to attack).
All that aside, I was shocked by the anti-America propaganda that was in it. The phrase "The Americans" sounded like dirty, distasteful words coming out of ole Patrick's mouth as he explained with scientific authority how we (USA) destroyed the planet, lied to the U.N. etc.
I realize that there are many in the UK that don't like how we do things, but it certainly is sobering to actually see British producer's doing their best to slip in messages to support their obvious dislike of the U.S. and even their own government.
I was wondering if this is a common practice or did I just happen upon a rare occurrence.

It is not uncommon. Even Goldeneye, the Bond film, M says "Unlike the Americans we don't get our news from CNN".
Sorry.

A lot of My American friends ask me this question. My simple response is usually........"are you sure you want to know what the majority of the world thinks of you".
Their usual reply is, we dont give a f**k. !
I reply.........Thats the problem!

I submit that it would be a much bigger problem if the US made its decisions based on what would win us the most brownie points with a bunch of people who think we are the only nation on earth that isn't entitled to seek it's own best interests.

My American attitude comes from my Celtic roots and reminds me of my favorite old Celtic phrase that Bodica said to the Romans........." bite me" :kck:

'British entertainment - Is this common?'
Very. In fact, as a general rule it's downright vulgarian. But let's not go there.
Anti-american/anti-government? Sometimes, but no more so than in the USA itself. Indeed, there is a vein of anti-british sentiment that occasionally crops up in American entertainment that is equally ill-received on this side of the Atlantic.
'C'est la vie', as we francophiles like to say.

Apparently this week's episode of "Top Gear" is quite epically anti-American. I can't wait to watch the download when I get home from work tonight. Jeremy Clarkson seems to get a lot of mileage out of making fun of Americans. And he does it very well.
Personally, I think we could stand to have a better sense of humor about it.

Well said, Mark.
One thing Aussies seem to be able to do, and enjoy, is to laugh at themselves.
Of course we also enjoy laughing at the English and the Kiwis. :nana: kit:
