Apologies for the off-topicness ....

Probably heading over to Munich in the next few weeks on business, and I'm thinking of having my wife and 2-year-old son tag along for some tourism after business is concluded. It will be his first time out of the US.

We can bring our car safety seat for him, with uses the LATCH system. Is a seat required in DE? Will cars (taxis, more accurately) readily accept our seat? I understand that Britax seats are "world" models and that the LATCH system also is essentially worldwide.

Thanks for any input or pointers.

Heck yes, a car seat will be required. You can't even put a child in the front seat until they are 12 years old. I can't guarantee that the cars will accept the LATCH system, but those car seats work without connecting LATCH too. There might be some governmental approval issues; I'd suggest you call a rental car company and ask them about car seats. You could also call or email the Germany embassy and get their input. But that's probably unnecessary; I'd expect you could just bring yours and use it, and no one would bat an eye.

Enjoy your trip!

Yep, there's a new EU Directive saying that all kids under 1m35 have to be in a car seat, but like hidesert says, car rental companies hire them out. Why pay the excess baggage to bring your own seat and lug it around the airports?

BTW is LATCH the same as ISOFIX?

Yes.

And thanks for the tip on renting. I didn't know such things were offered (young child, never traveled with one before!). Hopefully, I can convince my wife that a rented safety seat is as safe as the one we own. Reason goes out the window when his safety is at issue.

Try pointing out that their choice of car seats had to go past their corporate lawyers. Just don't bring up corporate accountants. And wave your arms a lot.
