Hey everybody!

Hope the winter's treating everybody kindly - at least here in the northern hemisphere. How's the summer Down Under?

As usual, I'm here posting looking for help and advice and other sorts of information without contributing much lately to the friendly vibe of The Hangout. All apologies.

Here's what's up. I'm going to Moscow, Russia in a couple of weeks and I need some advice from some seasoned Time Zone Travellers on how to reduce my jetlag. This is my first trans-Atlantic trip, and I've heard that flying east is worse than flying west - which is all I've ever done. I've been online for the past couple of days reading too many varied and disparate remedies, preventatives and cures that I feel even more lost than before.

Can anyone help? In exchange for your kind assistance I'll tell you a story of friendship, reunions, car accidents and new love!

Stay up all night, the night before, 2 x shots of Jack, Sleep the whole way and you will have zero jet lag. My personal experience; Korea, Afghanistan, China, Japan, Germany, Iraq, Iraq, Iraq. :-g

Its simple - ride up to Alaska, take a boat across the Bering Sea, and you're there!

It may take a little longer but you will take in more scenery and avoid the jet lag.

Bon voyage!

If possible, break the trip up into segments. I was in Russia (St. Petersburg) in September after stopping in Iceland for a couple days. Jet lag tends to hit me pretty hard and I have found that flying to Reyjkavik and acclimating for a couple days before traveling further east really helps. I get a little lagged in Iceland and then a little lagged in Russia but not so lagged that I feel debilitated, as I do when doing a straight shot.

If you can't segment the trip, rest a lot before going, eat lightly, avoid alcohol on the plane and take some vitamin B-12 to help sleep. Foam earplugs may help you sleep on the plane.

Wow! Wow! Wow! I haven't been there since right before the coup in 91.

Drink LOTS of water. Sleep on the plane. Don't eat the plane food. Try to adjust to the time zone immediately. ie eat lunch at lunchtime, go to bed at night.

PS How is it possible to continually fly west? :???: :-D

My routine when going to Scotland is to book a flight that leaves late afternoon in Mpls., arriving early morning in the U.K.
I have a couple of drinks, dinner, then a half of a sleeping pill. With ear plugs, face mask and an inflatable neck pillow I am able to get maybe 3 hours of sleep. We hit the course the first thing, have dinner and force ourselves to stay up until 9:30 or so. Good to go the next day, and for the rest of the trip. On the way back, flying into the sun and daylight, I just read, read, read. No drinks. Get home and again try to stay up til 9:30 or so.
Takes a few days to not have an urge for a pint around 8:00 in the morning!
:-D

I've spent a lot of time about 18 years flying as a passenger in and out of different time zones. Yes for me flying East which in my case was coming back home was worse. I never suffer from jet-lag on my trip out only on my trip back.

I found that you should sleep on the flight as much as possible and then when you arrive at your destination immediately accept the time zone you are in. If you arrive during the day don't try to get a couple of hours sleep, you wake up feeling worse and then be unable to sleep that same night in your new time zone.

I never took any pills to try to stay awake or go to sleep, if it's an evening/night flight have a shot after dinner and sleep.

Enjoy your trip, Russia's quite fascinating right thru to the East.

Ride on !
