Squids buy by the numbers; HP and lap times being paramount.

And I heard they're called squids because they move like squids; short bursts of power, followed by long periods of coasting. And they don't go around corners very well.

I thought squid was an acronym, for "Stupid, Quick, Underdressed and Imminently Dead". The other explanation I heard is that they look like squids when they're in the emergency room with all their skin ground off... :-x

It started back in Motocross in the 70's, Squirrelly Kid=squid referring to someone who was all over the track out of control. It just migrated to sport bikes, most particularly new rider-no safety gear- riding a sport bike.

i 'm glad someone had the guts to ask what a squid is? i work with a lot of them. they want the fastest bike they can get their hands on. they race around the out loop of the city in the summer time ... 150 mph ++++
they run in packs and party at local spots . i have 1 friend that races down town chicago on a hiabusa. he runs with the packs and races in the middle of the night. this applies to girl squids also....
fast -cheap -ride

Sorry for not making the term clear. Here is an explanation from Wikipedia:

A squid is an irresponsible motorcyclist. The term is derogatory and common among motorcyclists in the United States and is generally associated with a new or reckless motorcyclist seen riding erratically and/or beyond his or her capabilities, often without appropriate riding gear.

The origin of the word is varyingly attributed:

* A contraction of:
o "Squirrely" and "kid" (possibly taken from California surfing culture), or
o "Squished" and "kid"
* An acronym for:
o "Stupidly Quick, Underdressed, Ignorant and Dangerous", or
o "Stupidly Quick, Underdressed and Imminently Dead"

Note: both of these are likely to be backronyms

* Derivative of U.S. military culture:
o Newly-inducted sailors based in San Diego in the '60s would frequently buy an inexpensive two-stroke motorcyle for transportation while on shore, whether they'd ever ridden before or not. So, there were large numbers of unprotected, inexperienced "marine life" squirting through traffic in a hurry and leaving a trail of black "ink" (smoke) behind them.
o "Squid" was also a common derogatory term for sailors:
+ Recent inductees were called "squids" by more senior sailors, and
+ All sailors were called "squids" by Marines
* Based on similarity between the way a "squid" rides and an actual squid swims.
o Squids can appear unable to change direction while swimming without first coming to a near complete stop. However, once the squid does stop and change directions, it can very quickly accelerate back to its regular swimming speed. Beginning motorcyclists (especially sport bike riders) commonly have trouble negotiating turns, and must slow down to unnecessarily slow speed, while at the same time have a tendency to ride very fast on the straight sections of the road.

Often young, squids are identified by their reckless abandon (speeding, wheelies, stoppies etc.) and by their inappropriate attire (shorts, backwards ball caps, flip flops, wifebeater T-shirt, etc). Such a rider eschews all or most of the protective gear worn by many riders (helmet, gloves, leather jacket, riding pants, and boots) and the social and legal norms of riding behaviour, and as such is looked upon with derision by experienced motorcyclists, who also refer to them as "organ donors", "Zip-Splats", "a Stillie", "Skin Crayons", "Sausage Creatures"<1> and "soon-to-be-ex-motorcyclists".

Worked with a kid (squid) last summer. He loved my ST and had never ridden before. I think he was 18. Always asking me if he could ride my bike. Sure......... a no. After a few weeks he shows up to work on a new R1. Well at least he wore boots. He was so geeked. At break he would hop on his bike and just pinned it. For the first time I felt old. Just watching him shaking my head. It was fun watching him trying to look cool while not dumping it after 12 O'Clock wheelies and slamming stops.

The bike only lasted for three weeks. I guess he went out with some of his friends (other squids) and they were trying to push it on the twisties and he wadded it. Only suffered road rash and pride.

I took it easy on the poor guy, figured he had suffered enough. His new at work was squid. Go figure.

If one of these squids crashes and burns does that mean that he can then be called Kalamari?
