Great answer. Dial up will always be a great back up when all else fails in DSL/Cable land. Also dial up allows you to access other equipment where 9600 baud is more than enough to work from home or a remote location.
Yes for internet use dial up can be very slow but it does have its advantages in other areas it also has a lot more range, distance wise. A faster version od dial up was ISDN which doubles up the speed of dial up by using 2 DS0 (or 56k) lines versus one. for over 100k of speed, not great but a lot better than 48-53k where higher speeds are not available.
