Golfer, are you listening?
The Scoti, a local shop featuring all things Brit/celt/scots (featuring a fine line of bone and parian china TEA THINGY'S) has invited me to a dinner featuring the great Robert Burns.
Who him?
Ignorantly,
Mare

O, My Luve is Like a Red Red Rose.
O, my luve is like a red, red rose,
That's newly sprung in June.
O, my luve is like a melodie,
That's sweetly play'd in tune.
As fair art thou, my bonie lass,
So deep in luve am I,
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
Till a' the seas gang dry.
Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi the sun!
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
While the sands o life shall run.
And fare thee weel, my only luve!
And fare thee weel, a while!
And I will come again, my luve,
Tho it were ten thousand mile!
I hope that helps some Mare...

I was born in Dumfries and, like Burns, a "Doonhamer" through and through. I used to regularly drink in "The Globe", sitting on the same benches and warming myself at the same fire as the bard. I was brought up with the writings of the man as well as the annual Burns Suppers. They're always a great night out – listen to the tale of Tam-o-Shanter and, if you're the only lassie there (unlikely perhaps) you might have to reply to the Toast to the Lassies. Have fun and remember – with uisge beatha you'll face the de'il.

Keef,
Although he lived in a variety of places, the bard was born down the road from me in Alloway. 'Burns cottage' is directly across the road from Alloway post office, from where I've posted a few bits and bobs to forum members around the world, here they are:
The only 'club' that I'm a paid up member of is the CTC (cycle touring club) and our branch has a tour put together called : 'Burns by bike'
my favourite Burns quote is from 'To a louse'
O wad some Power the giftie gie us
To see oursels as ithers see us!
It wad frae monie a blunder free us,
An foolish notion:
What airs in dress and gait wad lea'e us,
An ev'n devotion!

Johny's right - although Burns lived a good part of his life in Dumfries (where there
is also a "Burns' Cottage") he did originally hail from Alloway in Ayrshire and no Doonhamer
would never wish to steal the man's birthright.
His best known hero, Tam-o-Shanter, was from Alloway too and, one night, stopped for
a drink at a local inn - unca fue at the nappie – laughing with his friends and eying a local
girl who got more appealing the more he drank. But closing time came and Tom had
to ride for home on his old mare Meg. Drunk, he rode past Allowa' Kirk where, amongst the
unearthed skeletons in their coffins, he saw bogles and a scantily clad local
floozy dancing a possessed jig to entertain Auld Nick himself. The lust ridden
scallywag was unable to resist a closer look and, in his excitement, shouted out,
"Weel done Cutty Sark!", and in moment all was dark. The assembled ghouls
sailed furiously out of the graveyard at him and chased him to the bridge,
managing only to grab Meg's tail before he crossed over the running water to safety.
The poor horse was left with barely a stump and a repentant Tam went home to his wife
who had been nursing her wrath to keep it warm.
An epic tale if ever there was one.
I'd postulate on the moral of it, but I'm mindful of the AUP!
:-D
