Trying to argue for loud pipes reminds me of PJ O'Rourke's definition of overpopulation: "way too many of you, just enough of me".

All I can say is I do love the sound of my Termis and Doms on the highway, and I make an effort to keep them on the down low around other people who I am well aware don't love the sound as much as I do. Hope there's a middle ground possible between straight pipe Harleys in the courtyard and electric bikes for all.

Given their size, motorcycles pollute a lot, and with no sort of smog certification in CA for bikes, this measure attempts to redress that fact.

Just sayin'
you mean admission? Sad it has to come to this. I also understand Cali is going to institute a moving tax also? Has something to do with moving from county to county.

Is it just me, or do other people think we have a repeat returning troll (and his mate...) making new accounts occasionally just to be obnoxious terds?

lvmealone, be interested to see a pic of you in front of your triple with a hand written note saying Hello Dog, I am betting you can't produce one...

Seems to me someone isn't getting enough attention at home.
Lock this crap down, all it is is two trolls baiting everyone.
There is nothing productive to gain here.

It's kind of obvious.

Oh, and while you are at it, perhaps a picture of you next to your FJR and your R6 your claiming you own on other forums as well...

Perhaps a group shot of all your bikes?

Looks like the Mods have solved that issue...although it does leave some awkward gaps in the conversation

I wonder how this is a workable law...I am not required in NYS to replace the exhaust components with OEM, on any of my vehicles; even aftermarket is extremely expensive on the International, OEM would probably be 30% of the value of the truck. What happens when, in a few years, OEM replacements are simply not available to repair worn or damaged components, or their replacement is more than the value of the bike?
The only exhaust available for my old 81 XJ 750 was a Mac 4:1. I'm sure it was louder than OEM, but lots quieter than 4 rotted head pipes dumping into a rotted collector.

I have the stock exhaust on my T100 and have no plans to change. It's nice and quiet. I get complements all the time (particularly from women) about how quiet my bike is. Loud exhaust just make you tired and irritate your neighbors.

If you really want cagers to notice you, install taillight and headlight modulators that vary the intensity of the light. People may not hear you, but they do see varying headlights and taillights.

I almost didn't say anything cause this argument is played out and will never be settled.
I have Lossa Stubby cans on my 2012 Thruxton. I have them for 2 reasons.

1) i Love how they look and sound, there what i want. Simple as that. they aren't as loud as some HD's or other pipes, but for the most part they are straight headers. It's basically a 6" extention and some fiber glass. I wouldn't pass the coat hanger test. I live in CA. At WOT they are loud. At idle they are pretty darn tame.

2) An added benefit, weather you agree or believe me or not, is that i get heard. In my first two weeks of riding I was cut off or merged in on 6 times. I was counting so I could do research. I was looking for justification. Since putting them on (End of April) I have been merged in on or cut off twice. Maybe its coincedence, but i've been told that I was heard before I was seen, and it kept her from hitting me. Granted I saw her and watched her before she saw me.

After I got my pipes on I went around and asked my neighbors that I live near if they heard me or if I disturbed them in the morning when I leave. Of 10 houses I pass in my neighborhood only one elderly gentle men said he was disturbed. But he admitted that's cause he's old and grumpy and wants his piece and quiet. He also said he realizes that's not exactly practical when you live in a society. It means give and take. He and I have respect for one another. I've agreed on mornings I leave before 6 to not ride, and I agreed not to leave or return after 10:30. If I come home after 10:30PM I kill the bike before the corner and walk it home.

when i pull through the neighborhood I pull through with my clutch in so it's coasting, and you can hardly hear it.

Bottom line is that this is a free country. I can and will do what I want so long as it's within the reasonable limits of the law. If I offend you i'm sorry, but lets admit that no matter what some one some place will be offended by something I or you do. Just say your piece and move on. I honestly don't care about pleasing everyone around the country or even the state with my sound level. I care about those i directly effect. Friends, family, neighbors, those i'm close to. That's why i asked my neighbors. They all know me and are cool with my levels so long as i don't get disrespectful. That's common curdosy. We compermised to meet a common goal of happyness and harmony. Small scale but it's better than calling cops or starting neighbor wars.

My experience is very similar to yours. I have been riding for 30 plus years and driving for almost 40 and simply do not understand how people can insist to the contrary. I hear things around me sometimes before I see them coming up on me and it is my sense of hearing that alerts me. How can people argue with something as simple as that? I can not dismiss a lifetime of experience that leads me to one conclusion, even if others say is not possible. I'm not trying to be a troll or stir things up. It just seems to make such basic sense on a fundamental level. It's like trying to explain air or gravity to a nonbeliever. Sound... it's one of our 5 senses, why continue to deny it could possibly have a tangible effect?

We can all agree that there can too much noise, but like others have said there has to be a middle ground as you approach the threshold of what is too loud. You can't logically jump from the nothing/no effect place to the too loud place and if it is loud enough to bother you then there should be a place somewhere along the bell curve that's loud enough to be noticed without being disturbing. That's where I want to place myself.

Noise is a strange thing. It may annoy you but it rarely really hurts you, it doesn't leave a mark, and when it's over it's over. End of story. Sometimes I see towns where they have posted the use of truck exhaust brakes is prohibited and I think to myself do they understand that they are compromising the ability of an 80,000 lb tractor trailer to slow itself safely because the noise might be bothersome? Pennywise and pound foolish...
