I had a free iPad at work, but gave it to someone else, I just didn't find it useful.
Biggest problem was that my "life" is in the Android/Google cloud. I wasn't interested in moving everything into the i cloud, at least not with a great benefit.
My android phone has the apps I need: contacts, music, podcasts and gps mostly. A couple games, a few news feeds.
My kindle is great for consuming content: books, magazines, web. Horrible for anything requiring keyboard entry though.
And I rely on my laptop when at home.
The iPad is just too big for the functionality it offers. If I'm going to carry something I can't fit in my back pocket (like the kindle does), then it's going to have to have a decent keyboard.
Which makes the Surface form factor interesting. If Microsoft ever gets it's act together. But I don't think it will.
Plus, I hate iTunes with such a passion that I'm getting in a rage right now just thinking about it. Does it work for me or do I work for it? It's a piece of arse.

I bought an iPad 2 for 1 app, Yamaha Stagemix, but have found a ton of uses for it, professionally and recreational, since. It saved my bacon when my laptop crashed, and it has turned out to be extremely useful in meetings and when traveling. My Droid 3 phone is very useful, but the iPad is much more enjoyable to do work on. It travels easier than a laptop when on a motorcycle and, having a solid state "drive", is less likely to be affected by vibration.
Things that I thought were stupid and useless but am now lost without:
Cell phones in general...why would I want people to be able bother me everywhere I went?
Texting...how stupid is it to bother typing a message, why wouldn't you just call?
Smartphones...all I need to do is make calls, and send texts, I don't need all this other junk. Except mapping ( Google maps is better than my ancient Garmin ). And being able to download manuals on service calls. And to have a pocket RTA. And a way to get the specific playlist a client needs that changed since yesterday's meeting...and 100 other things...
iPad...everything above in an easier to view package plus being able to mix audio from anywhere in a venue including standing next to an artist to get their perspective. My dream come true, and so much more useful than my clumsy attempts with VNC and a laptop. Every manual i need in PDF, including the service manual for my Speed Triple.
A motorcycle with 130 hp... When the original Yamaha Genesis engine came out, I thought everyone that bought one must be suicidal. OK, I <could> be happy with any motorcycle ( a KX 100 is a blast to ride ), but power is addictive.

I've been thinking of getting a tablet for a while now, but not an iPad. If/when I get one I am going to get Asus Transformer. It costs about half as much, does the same things and is more expandable. You can snap it into a keyboard and folds up just like a netbook which would be convenient.
I'm just waiting for the Apple fad to fade out. They have a hold on their current customers where they can change one or two dimensions of any product and people line up to buy the new "revolutionary" gadget. The iPhone5 just got 4g when everybody else had been using it for a year.

Amen brother! iTunes is the spawn of Satan.
Stopped any desire I ever had to go to a Mac dead in its tracks.

I got sucked into getting one about a month ago. It's not what I thought it would be and I am having buyer's remorse for sure, but I'm on the lower end of the learning curve. I need to hit the Genius Bar and get a few classes in to see what the thing can really do.

Second only to Adobe Reader, on my list of evil programmes.
Why the **** does a PDF reader need to update itself more often than I change my underwear??

Have an iPad3 with 4G LTE, iPhone, and an 11" MacBook Air. Love them all!
