Teenagers don't seem to be complaining about the rise in use of texting. I wonder what is keeping them motivated?:

No real reason but the longer version of the noise is the data transmission interfering with the speakers.

the little sequence of beeps the mobile sometimes does randomly is just it reaquiring or adjusting connection with the mobile mast (cell tower).

I used to be a pilot in my past life. You could always tell if a mobile phone was on board and switched on because you would hear it every now and then chortling away in the headsets.
