My kids all know they will be in 40 levels of schitt if they ever send me a text instead of ringing me for my birthday, Christmas or whatever.
A friend found out his mother got engaged by text, she just mass texted most of her phone book...
Like, really?

& how much time do you spend on your laptop uploading your latest adventures to TRN?

That's different. It would take a lot of time to call all of the forum members.
I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want to hear that, probably alcohol soaked, voice on my phone at 03:17 or whenever he felt like telling a story.

Many years ago, men used to tap out messages on a telegraph key until the 'newfangled' telephones that you could actually hear voice on were invented. Telegrams were still in existence until the late 60's only because that was the only way to communicate with someone at a distance who didn't have a telephone. It somehow seems counter-intuitive and a step backward to send text on the same device that you can talk on. .........James.

Minor hijack for anyone interested - morse and radio telegraphy is still alive and well and in use in the radio amateur community.
There have been several competitions between people SMS texting and morse operators sending the same messages, the morse operators so far have always been faster.
I like how the bipbipbipbeepbeepbipbipbip that phones give when they receive a text is morse for SMS

Until we were given the choice to label incoming txts with our own sound, at which point most of us unwittingly deleted the clever little series of beeps.
It was my 15 year old son who alerted me to the significance of the txt beeps.

So do I. But I also keep in contact with my friends and family 500+ miles away with my iPhone. It's a tool for communication. What the user decides to do with it is up to them.

Put your phone next to a speaker.

I now what you are referring to Spank. I deliberately don't put my Mb near my landline ph for the exact reason I think you are referring to.. But what is your message? Why should I interfere with my electrical items with my Mb?
