Old Scratcher, I had been admiring you for your abstinence from this forum over the past few months. I was considering an attempt to emulate you in your escape.
It seems that you are slipping back into your old ways. I'ts good to read your posts again but I do feel some disappointment too.

Maybe that's why so many people are walking around with them in their hands.
Like me, they don't know where else to put them.

I know where they can put them.

In case anyone was wondering about the definition of irony. OS just pointed it out
It's just another form of communication.

I don`t think there`s any Irony, as per the OP it`s more about a time and a place for everything. I`ve had a smartphone (OK, it`s a Blackberry, maybe not so smart!) for years, all my work emails come through to it, I FaceBook on it and I have unlimited calls and texts on my plan so I text and call on it quite a lot, too.
Believe it or not, when I started in real estate, 12 years ago, the acceptable response time to an email enquiry was within 48 hours. Now it is... 20 mins! It`s true. So if I am not with people, I am "slave to de smartphone."
However, the best app on my phone is the "off" button and I know when to use it. I know when to switch my phone off or ignore it, which is mostly when I am engaging with real people, which is something that Gen E and Gen Y seem to struggle with.

Oh Goody! By your definition, I am still an old stuck-in-the-mud. I love email. I particularly like the big window it gives you to compose your letter into and the freedom of attaching files in any format.

I've got a little free time, before the festive madness starts. & old habits die hard. I expect life to get hectic again in the New Year, & probably won't have the time to post much. But I'll see how I go.

My phone is a $10 flip-phone...it has an amazingly novel little "app" on it that actually allows me to converse with other people possessing similar devices. I think my kids are a little skeptical of it...they see me talking into it, roll their eyes, and walk off stupefied muttering something about Dad's been drinking again.

.Yes, it does take two to collide ; one minding his/her own business and one with a phone stuck in his/her ear while being moderately informed , entertained and oblivious to reality --- also a distinct lack of manners is required in order to possess such antisocial behavior !

I don't own a cell phone. Never have. Never will. I choose to be anti-social at times and access technology instead of spending time with people because many people are rude, boring, lack ability to respect personal space, unattractive, unintelligent, insist on imposing their small minded thoughts on me, did I mention unattractive, etc. I don`t lack manners. I simply make informed decisions about whom or what I wish to spend my time with that have led me to a successful comfortable life. I highly recommend it for others.

. Yes , " moderately informed" being the key words here ! I'm glad you mentioned them first !
