If ever I go out for dinner or coffee with friends, my family or even work, there is only one rule. Phones are on the table and they are off. If anyone`s phone makes so much as a squeak, that person pays the bill for everyone.

When we started it, you could keep your phone on and if you answered it, or replied to a txt, or FB post, you got the bill but some of my sneaky nephews and nieces put their phones on vibrate and kept running off to to the toilets to answer them.

So we upped the ante, all phones off, no exceptions. Some of my younger family members initially suffered FBSA (FaceBook Separation Anxiety) but they have gradually learned that it is not the end of the world to switch the phone off for a couple of hours and have some real time interaction with your family or friends.

Good thread.

And, most topically, this story appeared on the BBC website today. Interesting.

I don't know as there is something really appealing to being able to de-friend the entire human race.....

Honestly, can't stand what's happening. I do have a FB page but never log in and when I do I'm usually drinking and leave some sort of obnoxious message. It seems like email has become the new snail mail, no one uses it anymore.

I am a kid of the Facebook generation, before it became the Facebook we all know. I used back when it originally required a college verified email address. It started as a way to find out who was in your college classes so you could recognize classmates and schedule study time when everyone else was running from class to class. It was wonderful because it was a tool to learn who people were, so you could then go talk to them IN REAL LIFE.
It is still a great tool to keep tabs with friends but I also stay by this one thought,"You can count all your best friends on one hand." I purge my friends list every year and even though I may only have 20-30 friends, I have actually talked to them, with my voice.

P.S. I also sometimes talk to them in hand gestures, but that is only my GOOD friends.

I think texting and all that has made people socially awkward and weird. Some people dont know how to have a real conversation anymore. I have many friend who will be all chatty via text or bookface but when you see them in person to hang out in REAL LIFE they are silent and awkward.

Agreed. People have gotten so used to saying their piece in 120 characters, they have forgotten how to keep a conversation going. I have been on dates that have ended because rather than discussion, it was just statement after statement being lobbed at me.

Trouble with licences is when you need them you seldom have time to get them. Get it out of the way early.

I knew social ineptitude hit a new low when I was driving my son to a date (at 19 with no license) and he sat in the front seat texting with his date who was sitting in the back seat.
