Australia's first attempt at Reality Tele 1993
As far as I know Sylvania Waters was our first stab at reality tele. I have not watched as much as five consecutive minutes of it. Here is a small news viddie as to how the Poms received it.

I watch different ones from time to time. Mainly just Survivor and Amazing Race. Parking Wars and Moonshiners are pretty funny.

most of the "watch 'em work" show's are really scripted as well. A good friend was a cameraman on "Son's of Guns' for part of the first season, he stopped because it was really, really, ridiculously fake, and he was tired of getting loaded machine guns pointed at him by careless "experts". A lot of the crew were veterans of other Discovery shows like the one about crabbing, said it was almost all the same.
The dialogue and such on Dirty Jobs is fairly rehearsed I think, but Mike really does get in there and get dirty, gotta give him that.

You guys are all kidding, right? I'll bet there's a bunch of closet watchers out there that'll never admit it. Here's my list of crap TV that I flip to when I'm surfing.
Pawn Stars
Hardcore pawn
Cajun Pawn Stars
American Pickers
American Restoration
Swam People
Toddlers & Tiaras
All the Housewives
Honey Boo Boo
Full Throttle Saloon
Survivor
Big Brother
Top Shot
Top Gear (BBC), not that American trash
Amazing Race
American Guns
Son's of Guns
The Crush with Lee & Tiffany
Whitetail Freaks
Anything with Ted Nugent
Biker Buildoff
Chasing Classic Cars
American Hot Rod
Now tell me, what's wrong with all these?

I forgot about one I really liked - This Old House, which ran on the U.S.'s Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) for years. I'm not sure if it's still on. It's kind of a "real" reality show. Planned shots, some scripting, editing, etc., but that's just good production practice, not anything to get your heart pumping for effect. Well, maybe a promo that shows a giant Oak Tree being taken out really close to a house. Drama!
Even in the video I posted above, there are some crafty montage edits to draw out the standing ovations. You never know whether the reactions you're seeing from the audience or the judges match what you're hearing. I'm sure there's a lot of re-sequencing. When I watched an episode of The First 48 yesterday, there were a few obvious continuity edits, done for effect, but I can see why you'd need to spice some of this stuff up.
The trend I hate is that it's apparently entertaining to see people yell at each other and treat each other like sh!t. Well, it's not really a trend if it's been going on for decades; I guess it's more like a tradition now. I remember trying to give American Chopper a chance. It was entertaining for a while (I liked Mikey), but it didn't take long before I got sick of listening to them. Just cut, weld, and describe what you're doing. I would not be the least bit bored by a show like that. Weld, drive, fish, sing, paint the side of a barn with no drama - I'll watch.

I don't think you can count This Old House as a reality show by todays standards. After all, it was actually about something real and nobody yelled or threw things.
(side note, there is now a This New House show. A little different than the original, but watchable.)
I only wish TV producers would make shows without all the interpersonal BS and drama; something were as you said they just got on with the welding/building/whatever, but apparently that's been banned by the TV gods.

Oh, I forgot to ask. One of the reasons I posted the third vid in my OP was to ask what the hell that girl says in response to the question at 0:38 (what do her parents think about it). It might as well be Korean.
I finally translated "Em goatn seng Skenny Lulv ba Belty" (I'm going to sing Skinny Love by Birdy). EDIT: Extra points if you can hear her burp when she sings the first "Ma" of the last verse.
