I've posted this a lot of times, yet I still find it interesting. Rocky Flats (about 5 miles or so away) built plutonium triggers for A-bombs from the 50s till a few years ago. Stanley lake, even closer, can't be used for swimming because the fallout of a few "blooms" from Rocky Flats has settled to the bottom and the authorities don't want the contaminated silt roiled up, since the lake is also a source of drinking water.

The site was closed down and cleaned up (Yeah! Right!) years ago, but nothing can be built on it since it's toxic, so it's a wildlife preserve. Hasn't stopped developers from building right up to the border of it.

By the bye, I've been watching WWII movies and documentaries on TV all day about Pearl Harbor.

Scarey Stuff! I`m just glad I didn`t end up with four testicles instead of the usual three!

Joking aside, my dad was in the Royal Marines and was part of the USA Operation Crossroads, at Bikini Atoll in 1946. I have some great black and white original prints of Able and Baker being detonated.

My friend's Dad was a RAAF pilot who flew a plane through the mushroom cloud of the Maralinga Tests, to collect samples. Fortunately, for my friend, he was conceived before this happened. & fortunately, for any further descendants, & the man's future cancer prospects, he died in a plane crash the following year.
NZ is officially a non-nuclear country. Though what good that will do them if the missiles ever start flying is anyone's guess. Australia has always been happy to shelter under the US nuclear umbrella, which means we tacitly support all the unpleasantness that goes with it.
