beater bike?

What's a good list of sub-$1000 beaters you can leave out not-give-a-rip-if-someone-walks-with-it in the rain and exposed to ride in the winter? Fairly low maintenance, reliable, available parts, etc. Like, the Civic of Bikes?

add $500?
add $1000?
etc.?

Thx.

Nah, go with a Honda. They're stamped-out, soulless crap.

They can be unexpected too, but no laughing matter.

I can't remember when I last saw a beater bike that ran for that price. Well the scoot did but that was a fluke. The KLR's and old Honda's I've seen listed are still listed after months of wacked out pricing. I used to buy used Sprints for less than I'm seeing scooters and DS's listed for now. Ninja 250's of the old vintage are going for over $2K.
