More importantly, what kind of oil should I use to clean my guns?

This idea that we can fend off the government with our pistols and rifles interests me.
Back in the days of the Revolutionary War I can that seemed plausible.
But, it is no longer an issue of who has more bullets. These days it is about logistics, supplies and information/intelligence.
I mean, when the insurrection starts, how are you going to coordinate as you amass your 9mm Berettas and Mini 14 rifles? You going to email each other? Use your cell phones, or land lines? The NSA will pick that up in a heartbeat. Then in your Idaho compound, how are you going to get your food, water and gin you need to survive? In some way that wiretaps, satellites and network sniffers won't get wind of?
It doesn't really matter that the government has tanks and nuclear weapons. They have drones, and satellites and generally knows everything you say.
I don't really seem how an armed populace would be a threat to a 1st world country in this day in age.
As Demonic points out, when they passed the Patriot act I'm pretty sure not one person in Washington DC gave one thought to how many pistols there were out there. Because it doesn't matter.

You are right of course. It was hard for me at first to come to grips with the fact that yes, we in America do now have a government that is not at all worried about ordering one American to kill another American for political and ideological reasons. Hopefully though the young American told to kill their fellow citizen down the street will think twice knowing his neighbor just might shoot back at least once before he is killed. That once might slow the government down a tad.
Nah, you are right it is a lost cause and we should just roll over and let the government do as it pleases with us and to us. Not.

So, it's not a practical thing, it's a exercise in Faith. We believe that Guns will protect us from Government much in the way we believe God will save us from Cancer. It makes us feel good, but that's not really the way it works.
Gun ownership for hunting, personal protection, Fun and for being prepared for the Zombie Apocalypse makes a ton of sense to me. But fendIing off the government? I can't see it.
Then I think of Libya and I wonder. But still, I just don't see it.

Not being silly about tactics doesn't mean one doesn't have more effective tactics. Just because I don't think amassing guns is a solutions doesn't mean I've given up.

Yea...lets just let the government roll over us like the Libyans did and like the Syrians and Egyptians are doing right now.

Ever wonder what the American government agent thought when he pulled the trigger at an American woman in the Idaho compound?
Or the entire group of American government agents who pulled the triggers at the Texas compound/
Studies show it made quit a few sick in the head and made the government rethink some of it's own training for civil disobedience. Fear of home grown American militias and civil disobedience drives many government anti terrorist training sessions now and who knows what our government really believes it can do and get away with in the name of the war on terrorism when it knows some who disagree with it but are not terrorists have guns and might just defend themselves?
