Either way it sounds like the NHL needs to sit down and hammer out a proper long term system that doesn't involve holidays every ten years.

The problem is the death of compromise. Both sides want what they want and anything less won't do. This lockout was inevitable the moment the 2005 agreement was signed.

Now they have official mediators involved to negotiate between the sides. They should have done that from the start and there'd be NHL hockey by now.

I think NHL fans are about to discover what NBA fans discovered last year - that what happens between Oct and Jan is all fluff anyway, the season is far too long, and a 6 month schedule is more than enough.

I also hope that in the process of this "work stoppage" that so-called fans in the phony markets that Bettman concocted in one of his Dr. Evil fantasies, will lose what little interest they have in hockey and those franchises will go **** up. The 6 month schedule will never last, but the 24 team league just might.

The fatal error that both sides are making is believing NHL hockey is on the same plane as the NFL, NBA and MLB. On good days they're on the same level as professional bowling.
