What about the raises the management got? Were they based on merit? In my union, you don't get raises without good performance reviews. Mind you, we haven't had anything for over 5 years, and only the fact that we have a union prevents the city from imposing on us what they did to the non-reps, including axing the pension and charging several hundred more per month for health insurance.

Remember how food stamps were an issue in the election? Did you know that a majority of the people working for Walmart need to get food stamps? That's because the company doesn't pay a living wage, and has worked to avoid paying things like overtime and healthcare. How's that for welfare, they make us pay for their workers! That's why we still need unions.

How very Ayn Rand of you, you don't need help, as if that were actually true to begin with, and even if it were, screw those that do.

Of course, Ayn took Social Security disability payments so she wouldn't risk her personal wealth.

Since when is working for a living a socialistic handout. What rubbish! The fundamental reason for unions is to allow workers to have a contract between employer and employee. I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a ranking executive in any sizable corporation that doesn't have a contract in place. Since workers can arbitrarily be treated like sh¡t without one, it is to their advantage to bargain for one, collectively. If every worker who fashioned him or herself as someone special tried to negotiate for themselves, most of them would have a rude awakening. I couldn't live with myself if I snuck behind the backs of my fellow workers to brown nose for special treatment - unless I was a heartless sociopath.

You guys are proving my point. It is too bad both sides will hold onto their positions until the bitter end as we all fall into the void.

The non-perishable Twinkies have perished shortly before the end of the world? Well played Myans, Well played.
