I would summize that the company was having issues besides labor. The inability to negotiate a favorable contract with unions was one more nail in the coffin. They decided it was best to fold. Union leadership most of the time is clueless to the wants and needs of there membership. They will try to squeeze business as much as they can and sometimes it back fires. A while back unions petitioned the labor board to change how votes were taken. Again I have seen first hand how unions operate.
Balton, while bankrupting the company, the CEO gave himself a 300 percent pay increase, and similar increases for the rest of the top executives.. Struggling company shafted by the union. Obviously.
