Retro? I don't see any retro...

I think "retro" is kind of becoming like the term "cafe racer" now. It is ceasing to have any real meaning.

if they built it along the lines of the guzzi v7 or bonneville, it will sell.

the bmw r80, is my favorite bike ever. i would love one with a modern 1200cc oil cooled engine.

They do have one kinda sorta.

There's a version of the R1200R that includes retro styling tweaks such as paint job, special trim parts and "old school" laced wheels (not those robust but odd looking tubeless ones found on some of their adventure sports). You can see a little bit of classic Bavarian in it if you hold your mouth right.

But I know what you mean. It's an even weaker effort at "retro" than those Ducati things.

Before I saw the photo posted here I got a bit excited and thought oh no not ANOTHER bike I will "need" as I was thinking I would see a nice R100S retro reproduction of the classic type BMW, but as others have also said I was disappointed when I saw that new "retro" odd looking cafe type mutation...but thank you for sharing the photo.
BMWs are nice modern bikes with all the technology like ABS and adjustable windshields...I spent the weekend riding a Ducati and I mentioned to a friend that my hands were freezing. He then let me ride his BMW with factory heated grips (toasty) and I adjusted the windshield. Very nice ride. I would buy a R100S reproduction but it would have to look like the original classic.

Don’t think it is “retro.” I do like it, in the same way I like the Moto Guzzi Griso. Disposing of the wacky wishbone front suspension and opening up the back of the bike are all nice changes as well. Hopefully they’ll have done something about the quarter ton weight.

Will it use the new water-cooled boxer motor? BMW has done several vintage specials before...they're typically a current "R" model with wire wheels, black paint, and white pinstripes. The photo below is one of their previous offerings:
