Hard core jail time

The Norwegian convicted of the massacre of 77 people last year has said he is being held in "inhumane" conditions.

Anders Behring Breivik complained in a letter to the prison service that his coffee is served cold, he does not have enough butter for his bread, and he is not allowed moisturiser.

In the letter, he complains that the cell is poorly decorated and has no view. "I highly doubt that there are worse detention facilities in Norway," he writes.
Among his other complaints are:

  • the handcuffs he wears when being moved around the prison "are too sharp and "cut in his wrist"
  • the cell is too cold, forcing him to wear three layers of clothes
  • he has to rush his morning shave and brushing of teeth
  • light and television switches are outside the cell, so he has to ask for help to change channel or sleep.

Silverado's quote was only chosen because it is the first. I could've chosen any of them.

I seriously feel disturbed and sorry that any one of us Humans can reach such a fcuked up mental state and just as disturbed that we believe the answer is as simple as killing off the problem. There are so many reasons why this Bloke could've tripped out; I am not willing to judge him. If I lived in France, Netherlands or even England, I can't guarantee I would be as sane as I am now given the fcuked up ways their societies function regarding religious migration (I gather that was one of his main issues), though I doubt I would ever hack a group of campers up with a high powered rifle.

But I am extraordinarily lucky. I have only had minor infringements imposed on my freedom of choice and I don't have to compromise my beliefs or attitudes very much or very often.

I am surprised this kind of thing doesn't happen more frequently given the way society is structured and the way which differing cultures are forced to understand each other immediately, nor with any real support.

He's right there probably aren't worse detention facilities in Norway. Do you think we could find a country that DOES have worse facilities to move him to?

D41, thanks! I have to admit, that I was having trouble with my vocabulary as well, on this one. Well stated! I'll Ditto that...and add this to bring the point home. :censored

Let me think just a moment. Yep. He is being mistreated alright. Assad kills 38,000 in one and a half years and still eats his dinner off golden coated plates. Plays with his kids every night and probably gets a little with out having to go to take a shower.

Norway is really tough.

You think he didn't order it done? What could be the difference of pulling the trigger 77 times, plus the wounded, yourself and ordering the killing of 38,000 and reading the reports from your killers every day?

The killing of any body is horrendous and the guy in Norway needed executed, not imprisoned. War crimes trials today treat mass genocidal killers they same way as Norway does it's killers. Jail for 25 years. BFD.

Sorry if you don't see the hypocrisy I do of how much effort we put into lambasting one killer and never mentioning another . IMHO only of course and with that I with draw.

Prisoners with media access ALWAYS complain about conditions; most of them over trivial issues. If conditions are truly harsh, they generally have no media access to begin with. He's just waking up to the harsh reality that it's supposed to be punishment. They're going to take away his life; one day at a time rather than all at once. I don't see the Norwegian government letting him out anytime in the foreseeable future. ....................James.

I don't think that's my point, Dee.

Shouldn't we be more interested in what initiated such behaviour and not immediately suppose that the whole of the problem lies between the ears of this deranged individual? What if - just for sake of rational interest - we have issues in the way we treat people socially now days that exacerbate weaknesses in peoples' psyches?

I am not trying to suggest at any level that we don't need to immediately remove such individuals from free society.

Bol, all those countries are still over 90% white Christian/athiest(you know what I mean). It's really not as big an issue as its made out unless you happen to live right in the middle of a large group.

I do agree that killing him is probably not the answer though.

try to become the next US president. You'll get a get out of jail card for free. while you'll be able to kill a lot of people at the same time...

an earlier post with very flawed logic and a double morale about assad ticked me off. nothing compared to the 100.000 ds of iraqis during Gw2...Oh i forgot, they had womd because george said so...

on topic:
breivik should shut the f up. loser. horrible crime by a psychopath. who cares about his moaning?

Be offended about crimes with a nations legal backing, much worse. oh wait, congress never approved did they? make that illegal then

Sorry PopPop, I seem to have overlooked you, an oversight on my part, I apologise.

I think I can squeeze you in just between the people who drive in the left lane at below the speed limit, and people with mobile phones in cinemas.
If this is inconvenient, you will have to wait until I finish with the people who make really loud television commercials... again, I apologise.

I must add, I once passed a school bus that was stopped in the road, if that helps.

But, it's not about me, I guess. I make decisions about what laws I obey and which ones I break, based partly on my perceptions of the consequences and whether or not I will be caught. And, partly on my interest in just being a good citizen. In short, i respond to treatment.

Here in my home town we just had someone kill 7 people in his work place after being fired from his job. He then took his own life and got the attention he wanted. People who are criminally insane act out of personal need and capital punishment won't deter there their behavior. It only provides an outlet for our own outrage and is nothing more than our own vengance. Whether this guy is executed or imprisoned untill he dies matters little to me and I can ignore his whining, I learned to do that when raising teen agers.

There is a level of sociopathy that is chaos in the world and it's going to exist regardless of what we do. Laws won't prevent it, prisons won't prevent it, bullets won't prevent it.

Keep this guy and his like locked up for life, at least then we can limit the amount of blood we have to mop up to that which is spilled by the next nut job.

I suggest a large ball pean hammer..it is relatively inexpensive. It has a multitude of uses besides being used for mechanics. It can be used very well in crushing metacarpals and carpals one at a time slowly. It also works just as well on Knee caps! When the task at hand is done after afew days a slow hard rap to the skull finishes the job.
I for one would be more than glad to bring one there, pay for the air fair and complete the task for them....it is terminating a parasite and therefore it benefits society....

Freaking piece of garbage...give me a break ...you see what happens when you don't take care of the scum of society....:finger:ThumbsDown Even better four horse and rope to each limb ...gitty up...

Pop agreed but instead of just locked up label them a child molester as well and put them in general poipulation...it will be self correcting in days...

iBALEE: Child molester? you may have something there. At the very least, his sore bung would take his mind off of the tepid coffee :D
Life expectancy in a prison yard would be brief...therefore self correcting...lol

You can't appeal prison yard justice....:D

I share your outrage about Breivik's horrific crimes. I also understand your need to blow off some steam; if it had been up to me, they would have hanged him on the courthouse lawn. Executions are sometimes a necessary evil, but they should be quick and merciful, like flushing the toilet after your poop-de-jure. Anything else is like digging the waste out of the bowl to play with it first. :D Yes, under certain circumstances, I'd render the coup-de-gras; but there's not enough Nazi in me to enjoy it. And for all your rhetoric, I don't think there's enough in you either. ..........James.
James you are perhaps right...but I would be able to do the quick dispatch with out issue...and feel no remorse for an animal like this....

Heaven forbid, no!

There are already folks employed in the execution business. Me volunteering to eliminate every imprisoned miscreant might put someone else on the already lengthy unemployment line. Then the hangman might also snap, and go on his own killing rampage. Best to leave the killing of condemned criminals to the professionals, or their cell mates. :)
Twenty years as a RN and EMT...it goes against the first do no harm...(my Plate on my bike) but in this case ...I could be coaxed very easily to step up and assist...(no charge) I would be willing to do volunteer work..:D But I still like my ballpean suggestiion..low tech and reusable...of course we would remove any bio hazard....

My father in law a very smart and good man once asked me if I could shoot an intruder that had broken into my house. I responded how many times? It is not something good people want to do...but sometimes it is necessary for your protection and safety. Don't think that this guy can not hurt anyone in jail..he could very well attack a guard...so termination would be a good end for him...jmop. All in favor signify with a YEAH!

Regarding the death penalty imo the question isn't do they deserve it (don't care about them) but rather what does enforcement do to the rest of us?

There's an author (Robert J Sawyer) that described a society in which there was no death penalty. They don't have punishment but consequence. It's not about teaching someone what they've done wrong since they had the same chance to learn that everyone does. Instead it's about "fixing" the problem.

For the commission of physical violence against another person the consequence is sterilisation for the person that did it and everyone that shares 50 percent or more of their genetic material. Parents, children, siblings. Cleaning the gene pool.
