What a great thread. I'd continue to follow it, but I'm too busy now planning my trip to Australia.

Just don't make the mistake of calling Scots, Welchmen or Northern Irishmen "British" or "English". Even though they all belong to the same United Kingdom it seems there is a real sensitivity among some. Here in the USA there is some degree of regional pride, such as identifying oneself as a Southerner, and from certain states (Texas comes to mind, as well as Oklahoma and maybe some others) while much of the citizenry here seem pretty apathetic about anything more specific than American (and that certainly is not a bad thing). I knew a South African who was often asked by Americans if he was a Brit or an Aussie, and that rankled him. I also knew an American of Swiss descent who was asked, based on his last name, if he was "German", which he did not take kindly to. As far as I am concerned, call me "Yank" or whatever. Especially in the fraternity of riders.

Just as South is actually up, which makes Australia On Top.
Left is the Correct side of the road to drive/ride your motor vehicle.

You lost me. The Brits caused this because some right handed no name knight 500 years ago wanted to whack some guy right handed with a sword so they drive on the wrong side of the road? And, just because you live upside down you bought into this lunacy? You has lost me in the lack of logic. Spock here, logic please.

As previously stated it dates from Medieval times....following the French Revolution, the new French Republic decided to change many things, like the introduction of the Metric System for example. The change to riding/driving on the right was made really just to be contrary to the old way.
In the ensuing years, as Napoleon's empire spread through Europe, those countries were also subject to the change...after the fall of his empire those countries decided to continue with riding/driving on the right, and as they in turn formed their own empires around the world, the same changes were put into effect....with the exception of the British Empire obviously, because they really didn't give a toss what everyone else was doing as they'd just kicked the crap out of Napoleon and the rest of his cronies.
HTH.

I was born in canada and moved to the states in the mid 50's " Canucks" were referred to as the French , I don't like being called a Canuck because I'm not. I'm Canadian with Icelandic heritage.alot of people think if your from Canada your a Canuck, not true.love the Brits the Aussies and the new zealanders. I had the privilege of working with the Aussies and kiwis in Vietnam back I the late 60's great bunch of guys ,man you Aussies know how to party!

Q. Do Americans drive on the wrong side of the road?
A. From a safety point of view yes.
This has been experimentally verified.
I ride in Australia. I have rarely come close to a head on collision here.
I spend 2 months in US and Canada. I had... well.. let's say "several" incidents where I nearly had a head on collision.
Difference between the two situations? Americans drive on the opposite side of the road.
Conclusion. Driving on our side of the road is safer.
Perfectly logical, experimentally tested evidence.

That schit fight was so bloody obvious it was appalling, and the mods got sucked into it.
For a long time the word Jap had been used on this forum without comment or furore, then it was used by one member, and reported by another member as racist. (who had an axe to grind with said member) Absolutely pathetic, using "political correctness" to selectively beat another forum member around the head with.
You know who you are... your pathetic.
My 0.02c worth.
