No one in my family rides and they either don't approve of the "motorcycle thing" or they're tired of it.

If I don't get them for Christmas I'll buy them for myself.

I'm curious what makes you say those have seriously good protection? I don't see anything in those that would prevent your feet from being horribly twisted in any direction, or your ankles from being crushed to smithereens. By contrast, here's a picture of a pair that do offer all the protection a good motorcycle boot should.

I believe what you're looking at is a variation/copy of these:
http://www.lewisleathers.com/product...l?code=boo-178
If they are not in fact copies, then they are as well made a boot as you'll find. They won't offer the protection of a modern GP boot, but on the other hand, you can't really wear your SIDIs with a suit.

Edit to add: And if you like the style, these are also a possibility - http://www.batesleathers.com/boots/b...?boot=tallroad

It says
• Steel Toe Cap
• Pull on Style
• 2 Side Loops
• Protective steel midsole
• Leather upper triple stitched for extra strength
• Fur lined
• Double density PU shock absorbent sole
• Fully moulded and removable insole
• Wide fitting
• Safety rating: EN20345 SB-P SRA

Which is why I asked

Hi Mikeg15, while those may in fact be well made boots, they would not be acceptable to me because, like all slip-on work boots, they stand a good chance of coming off in a crash. So while we all might argue over the level of protection we deem adequate, I think we could agree that staying on your foot would be a minimum requirement.

After seeing thousands of pirates to and fro going to the Lone Star Pirate gathering in Galveston, why hasn't any one here suggested flip flops or tennis shoes? Seems to work well with that crowd.
