Military care package ideas

A buddy of mine is in Afghanistan. I want to send him some goodies and I am looking for suggestions.

What should I send him? I have some back issues of Motorcyclist Magazine and I will go by the Harley dealership and pick up a brochure, yes he wants a Hog. I'll send him some Triumph brochures too.

What else should I send him?

I would say beer, but I think he's in a dry county. So a quick Google search yielded this:

Common Items Requested By Soldiers

Baby Wipes
Phone Cards
Hand Warmers
Foot Warmers
Tooth Brushes
Body Wash
Body Spray
Beef Jerkey
Comic Books
Travel Size Games (chess, checkers)
Deck of Cards
Memory Cards (i.e. PSP's)
Memory Sticks
Suntan Lotion
Non Carbonated Drinks (Propel)
Uniform T-shirts (which can either be ordered on line
from AAFES or bought at the PX)
Pictures From Home
Thumb Tack (to hang the pictures)
Hard Candy
Blue and Black Pens
Fly Paper (some areas where the soldiers live have lots of flies)
A multi-tool or really good folding knife
Sun Glasses
Digital or Disposable Cameras
Travel Size Packets of Laundry Detergent
Powdered Drinks, especially Gatorade
Blank Writable CD's
Crossword Puzzles, Word Searches, Soduku

dont send those toiletries above. afghanistan is littered with toiletries sent in care packages, decks of cards, sudoku puzzles and the like.

Magazines are always good. It almost doesn't matter what kind.
Beef Jerky (restated for emphasis)
Fly paper (restated for emphasis)
Dipping Tobacco
Coffee (ground, not maxwell house)
Instant Coffee (that starbucks stuff is awesome)
Hot Chocolate
Baked Goods

I second what Air Pirate has said.

When riding, always wear a long-sleeved shirt. It gives you something to wipe your nose on.

Send a message via Skype™ to Huckleberry

When my son was deployed, he always liked the little bags of trail mix (buy it by the box at Costco), gum, magazines (cycle, guns, etc), new/clean t-shirts.

I also bought a few 16oz [plastic] bottles of Sprite (green plastic), dumped them out, and filled them back up with vodka, then wrapped them up in bubble wrap. I think that was his favorite "surprise" (If big brother is watching, I didn't really do this...just thought about it).

I used to send him a box full of stuff every month (2 deployments, 8 months each). I don't think the contents really mattered all that much - he was just happy to get the packages and see what I could come up with to keep it interesting. He said they would all trade stuff anyway.

I have done this a couple of times for guys I met on forums.

Bread. Bake a good, dense, whole wheat loaf, cool completely, wrap in three plastic bags, and ship by First Class or Priority Mail, it will get there in a week and be good. I also shipped one guy's unit a box of 50 Philadelphia-style soft pretzels.

According to the USO, prepaid phone cards are also good.
