Sitting Up Can't Sleep Shoulder Pain

:faceplantI have had a round of sterioid shots in my shoulders and it settled down my right shoulder. I also had a pack of oral steroids as well, but my left sholder is extremely painful at night which is when you feel a rotator cuff tear the most. My orthopod wants me to get a MRI and I will be after tonight. It is looking like I may have torn my rotator cuff. I picked the right time of year for it at least I got to ride all year and I will only be off the bike for a short time if I need surgery.

I think the big ride prompted my shoulders to be inflamed but the damage was done allitle while back when I hoisted or muscled the Rocket up right. I did not let it fall over when I was stopped and after getting it up right my left shoulder wass sore for weeks. I may have torn a segment of my Rotatator cuff back then.

If I did I will be getting surgery which involves getting at least one stay screwed into the bone. Stays have a heavy ethibond type suture attached to them. Essentially acting as an anchor or a man made tendon of sorts for muscle. I have attached some photos of stays or anchors.

i know most of you will not be interested in this thread...but to be honest it is taking my mind of the discomfort and the exhaustion I am feeling right now. :D So I thought I would write about it. If I have to get the surgery I will be back riding in a short time. I have already started planning several IBA rides for next year.

My season is cut short. I got the official word on my shoulder. It is torn in two places and fluid and swelling I have a date for my surgery..just before Thanksgiving. . But I can go back to riding two months after my surgery.
I guess I am getting old after all. I should have let the Rocket drop instead of muscling it up ..now I am paying for it. I am going to take the bike out all this weekend and make some distance....it is going to have to hold me over for a while.

Tore mine last summer. When Doc said, "Let's wait. It will probably get better obits own." I couldn't believe anything so painful would just "get better."

Well, it did. A few years before I tore my ACL. I never got that fixed either. Staying away from surgery works best for me.

BTW: both injuries occured showing off for girls 30 years my junior. Did my shoulder diving off 30 foot rock (hell yea I dive). Did my knee attempting to catch a girl down a giant slalom course.

I'm am old, my mind is young, and my body ain't what it once was.

The MRI showed a large tear and muscle atrophy of the super spinousess. The surgeon is a great one and I respect his advice. he told me it was not going to get better with out surgery. I am not sleeping right now the pain is high and I can't afford to wait and damage it even more..

I should be back on my bike by the end of January...about eight weeks. I will start PT after three weeks. My wife works in PT and is going to help me on teh road to recovery. I want to be in shape by June of 2013

I have a freind at work who I did the Texas ride 1500 miles/22 hours and 43 minutes with he is asking me to do the 10,000 iin 10 days (no four corners though)with him. I have decided to do it again and try to do it in less than nine days this time. He is a great rider and I told him he could ride with me any time. We hit it off and had a great texas ride. we took turns setting the pace..at night we maintained speeds of 85 to 90.

The route will be set to maximize the ability to cover distance. Minimiize traffic and far away from tourist traps and NY, NJ and such.

So I don't want to assume my shoulder will get better with out surgery and go with the surgery to ensure it will. I have a few more IBA rides left to do over the next decade or two.....:D

I tore my left shoulder rotator cuff about 10 years ago. The doctor told me it was arthritis and gave me arthritis medication, which didn't help at all. I kept going back to him, and he kept giving me stronger medication, which didn't help the shoulder pain. Meanwhile I developed frozen shoulder and could hardly move my left arm.

I finally called the insurance company and insisted I be allowed to see an orthopedist. He did an MRI and discovered the torn rotator cuff. He gave me some exercises to do at home to get the shoulder moving and put off surgery until I tried that for a few weeks. I was able to get back to full range of motion without surgery, and consider myself very lucky.

I never did figure out what I did that caused the rotator cuff to tear. The only after-effect of the torn rotator cuff I have experienced is that I don't feel comfortable hitting a golf ball hard. It actually improved my golf game because even though I don't hit the ball as far as before, I don't slice it off into the rough every time I take a shot.

Hope everything goes well with your operation. With time you won't even remember the problems you had!

Thanks Lee. The Rotator cuff is made up of a group of muscles with the tear being the origins for each one. I have had this tear for a couple of years. If I don't act on it I could make it much worse. I don't take medication but I have been hitting the Ibuprofins 800 mg ...which you should not do long term...I do appreciate all the responses. thanks

Lee. A personal question you don't have to answer if you don't want too.

What in blue blazes are you going to do with all that time you will have on your hands for 8 weeks?

I mean, for a fellow who works full time and yet finds time to ride 30,000 in one year on a lounge chair your days and nights were fairly full. I have been thinking of things you might get to fill your empty days.
The best I have come across is the new GP racer game for the IBOX? It actually threw me off twice. My grandson's buddy got it and those guys spend 2-3 hours a day virtual riding. Little twerps will never actually ride but this is close. Moto Time 3.2

Hap I use to work out to the point of obsession in my thirties..weights..aerobic...every day. I was lifting more in my thirties then in my teens. I put on twenty pounds of muscle after losing a ton of weight and had under a 32 inch waist..

I plan on hitting the gym under the instructions of my PT and ease myself into losing weight and gradually building my strength back up ....

After all I did commit to an Iron Butt with you so I need to make sure I am up to the task....and I am a man of my word....:D

Hap while the wing is a lounge chair it is a heavy one...and I manage the twisties very well on it considering the size and weight....but that is the way I like my bikes large and big on HP / torque.....
