Go get it Tremor.
OK, pulling the front plastic off this thing is like pulling your own teeth. It's all in fairly good shape but some fastening points are broken and the left turn signal part is busted off. Got all the plastic bits inside now and will repair what I can, replace rusted screws and start buffing out imperfections and give them all a coat of wax.
Note: if my registration fails and this turns out to be hot (I ran the VIN and nothing came up) I'm gonna be P!$$ed.
Lot's of beer in the fridge, time to put some tunes on and polish my plastic bits.
Note: These bikes often get the broken plastic removed and ridden naked, they call them Skellies. Don't think that thought isn't crossing my mind after removing the plastic. Here's a fine example...
$$ spent so far...around $100 and that includes $50 for registration and plates in VT.

You got that right Denis...what do you think I'm up to here anyhow? I'm thinking Clair. You should have seen her eyes light up when I showed her a pic of "The Beast"
You just know she's scooter friendly.
BTW, for Denis's lady friend (we need a name here please), Denis never even said hello to this girl and always diverted his eyes to every barmaid in the establishment. Welcome to the US. We need pics of you in the side car.

Mother May I...
take two steps back?
Damn! Went out tonight to install the new ignition switch and replace coolant. Damn if it'll start.
I left off Saturday after my short test ride and decided to adjust the valves. Easy peasy, just find TDC and loosen two bolts, move the swing adjustments out until you feel pressure, move back in a notch. I think I screwed something up here. Shouldn't have messed with it while it was running well and yes I did wait over night to let everything cool off before adjusting the valves. Maybe a loose wire, maybe something isn't set right but I can't get er started now.
Move me to the back of the class Dave and Lefty.
Spent close to 3 hours out in the garage tonight and only ended up with more parts torn off and no headway.
Good thing I'm reading Zen right now, otherwise I'd have blown a gasket.
I'm not even going to mention the treads in the top for the plug that have been suspect since day one. They're getting worse every time I mess with the plug...whoops, I mentioned it.
Zennnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn...

That will work. Guess I'll have to pull the head off to drill it out. For now the plug is snugging up ok but it's not going to do that for long I think.
Can't imagine why it's not starting. Maybe removing the gas tank stirred up some crap and clogged the filter or carb but it wouldn't even start with starter fluid sprayed into the carb and that has me baffled. I'll let it sit til the weekend and then look it over with fresh eyes.

Got fire? Yep
Checked for spark? Yep
Timing? Not yet, it's not adjustable from what I've read.
Sufficient voltage?
Valves seating? Not yet, I'm suspicious of it.
Ain't this fun? Sort of, with the right amount of beer on hand which may explain why I couldn't find the problem last night.
Note: Got my paper work back from VT yesterday. Apparently the minimum amount you can purchase a vehicle for (for tax purposes) is $500. So I have to cut a check for $74 instead of $50. Also, I was missing some numbers on the VIN. Maybe that's why it came up clean when I did a search to see if it was stolen. With all the plastic off now I'll have a better view.

Well damn! After messing around for the last week or so trying to get this beast started again I finally had success. What a good feeling. Couldn't figure out what had gone wrong, all I'd done was remove the fuel tank and adjust the valves. Well apparently I tightened the intake valve too tight and it got stuck. Borrowed a compression gauge from Auto Zone to check that but the adapter wouldn't fit but while I was messing with that I loosened the adjustment on the intake valve. Put the plug back in and bam, ignition. Still can't check the compression. Took back the loaner gauge and bought one with 4 different fittings, none of them fit. Oh well, it'll work on the other bikes so I'll keep it.
Now I can get back to changing the coolant and put this back together. Hopefully my plate will come in the next few days.
Ain't this fun?
