Disrespect
I've just found out about this, and am absolutely disgusted.
http://sports.nationalpost.com/2012/...ning-ceremony/
During the Olympic Opening Ceremonies, there was a moving tribute to the victims of the London terrorist attacks that killed twenty some people the day after London won the bid for the Olympics. The national joy at winning the Olympics was slightly ruined by the fact that 24 hours later bombs exploded in busses and tubes, killing so many. So during the opening ceremonies, one segment was dedicated to their memory
But this didn't matter to NBC. They decided that the American audience wouldn't be interested, so cut it out and replaced it with an interview with Phelps. I think this is absolutely disgusting. Can you imagine if the UK decided to edit out a tribute to the 9-11 victims?
No offence to my American friends on here, but no wonder a lot of the rest of the world thinks rather poorly of American attitudes. And no wonder a lot of American attitudes to the rest of the world are questionable, when their media hides so much from them. The victims of the July 7th attacks deserve more, and the American people deserve more.
Utter, utter disrespect. Fair enough to only show events where Americans are appearing (the UK media does the same, so do most other countries, I'm sure.) But to edit the opening ceremonies in such a way, to be so damned patronising to your own audience, and to be so viciously disrespectful to the host nation, they should hang their heads in shame.

Apparently NBC wasn't made aware what it was supposed to commemorate.
Though I suspect this will go down in history with everyone believing otherwise like so many things do.

Bollocks they didn't. Sorry, I don't believe that. What did they think it was for? And if they didn't know, do you not think they should have asked before cutting it out?

I believe you are right... No one will want to take responsibility for the lack of communication on the matter.
Plus, the whole idea of disrespecting those killed in an unconscionable terrorist attack makes for great headlines... Far better then "We forgot to tell NBC...."

God knows.
I couldn't make head nor tail of it till the NBC announcer told me.
Before that I thought it was very odd and not a little disturbing.

I'm sorry, but you don't understand the American viewing public. NBC made a calculated decision that because this memorial was for something that happened in a foreign country, the American viewing public would have little interest in it. They might be right, which would be a sad commentary on the American viewers.
NBC has been roundly criticized for its coverage, or lack thereof, of the Olympic games.

The 1972 Olympic Terrorist Attack ? Did it get much coverage?
Frankly, I wouldn't trust NBC with a time check.

But NBC showed it on a tape delay. So they would have already seen it, no doubt had the press-release in-front of them before they edited it and broadcast it later. The press release would have told them EXACTLY what every bit meant. Or do you think they had to figure out for themselves why, for instance, Tim Berners-Lee appeared?
No, I think NBC assumed the American audience wouldn't want to see it, or wouldn't understand it. If I were American, i think I would be even more upset by this. They are treating you like idiots.

If they are right, then that is a sad indictment of the American public. I hope it isn't. But if that's how the media treats you, then it wouldn't surprise me.

here is another idea that may disturb some on here... How many Americans do you think even knew that said terrorist attack happened to begin with?
