Nicknames
Nicknames...
Do kids still do this? Growing up in the 50's and 60's, every kid had a "nickname", that stuck like glue until they reached maybe 25 or so (sometimes longer!). Maybe not girls, but definitely every guy had a moniker.
They could be somewhat cruel ("Big Ears"), funny, nasty, demeaning, ethnic.. complimentary, whatever. In a way, it helped to make everyone a little immortal, as you would often remember soneone's "nickname" before you could recall their actual name!
Has the modern emphasis on perfect Political Correctness eliminated this practice?
I don't recall anyone being particularly hurt or destroyed by this old practice. Then again, I am 100% against "helicopter" style parenting, and other negative / modern ways to raise kids.

Welcome to another installment of Back in My Day with Gob-ny-Geay. Today's installment will talk about how life was so much better 50 years ago and how those darn kids need to get a haircut and a job.
Back in My Day is brought to you by Rinso Soap.

Yes, nicknames were common in the Sixties.
Mine was given to me by the sports master. Cricket: I could do the defensive shots well and stay in a long time (a natural born night watchman) but I wasn't good at driving. The teacher(cynically) named me 'Basher' and it stuck !
Nicknames never hurt any of us. Besides, I've been called a lot worse since....

In today's PC climate and with anti-bullying laws on the books, you'd be in serious trouble hanging a nickname on a friend like Pigpen, Fat Albert or Whitey.

Oh, girls can do it, too. Mine is Coupon. Apparently I said it in my sleep one night. My friends claim in the middle of my sleeping I said, "I am a coupon"
They asked why.
I responded, "Because I feel like I'm in a square. And I'm going to kill the b!tch who put me here!"
So they have called me that ever since.

Sorry Gobny, but that's pretty funny - like hilarious. Not so much 'cause it's a shot at you but I really liked Day rhyming with Geay.

OMG that was funny, too! Easily popped!
Good find, Bolder, the rhyming thing there. Lefty is so quick and clever that never disappoints.

I liked it too. A little misinterpreted/context misunderstood, but mildly witty . I'll give it a "6", 'cause it's easy to dance to.
One of the great things you quickly learn by participating in a forum is to not take anything - including yourself - too seriously.
I thought my comeback was pretty decent too! No?
