Then Came Bronson
Have you ever thought about leaving your profession and just traveling on your bike and taking odd jobs?

There aren't many odd jobs out there. Everyone wants a CV & a half a dozen references, before they'll even let you sweep a floor these days. Fruit picking used to be a good way to get around this country. But much of it's done by machines these days, & even that work isn't as reliable as it used to be.

If I didn't have a family, I would probably do this.

I once had it figured out. Buy an old school bus, travel to small towns, work in diners for gas money and meals, have a brief fling with Ellie Mae the waitress, move on to the next town.
I've thought about doing something like that on my bike. I've already left two professions, and I'm seriously questioning why I would want to start a third one. What's really important? I ask myself this question every day. Divorced, dogs are dead, nothing holding me except a house. How much does a person need to live? How many possessions do you really need?
And then it all falls apart when I remember that thing called health care. Fear. Fear of needing it and not having it. Back to the drawing board...

Thought a lot about this at the beginning of the 90's. I figured I was in a decent position to do it with a paid off bike and a good amount of savings on hand so I really stared considering going on the road.
But
The more I thought about it the less it seemed like a good idea. I started envisioning all the difficulties involved and what I'd do when cash on hand ran out. And what if something happend to the bike? And what was I going to do about my apartment? Did it make sense to upkeep that if I was leaving with no real plan to return?
That's what ultimately stopped me. I wasn't ready to cut all ties with everything and essentially become homeless to live on the road.

We have an addition to Mama, food, and comfort that such a life style is unlikely to ever fully accommodate. For us, our running away will have to be limited to occasional jaunts through the county and home for supper.
We trudge on (tamely).
