Depends what you want to see, and how you want to see it. I tend to err on the side of keep going, but some things are so cool you really need to stop and look around. Having a riding partner helps to balance things out in a positive way. But there's always that time constraint - only so many days vacation. I wish I could take 3 weeks off in a row. Maybe I'll manage to do that in a couple of years, and do a really long trip.
Or it might be forced on me - 3 weeks and a lot more weeks. You never know in this day and age.
I like to have a plan though, I find I get the most out of extended trips that way. Just winging it usually makes me end up seeing nothing.

As long as we are in dream mode...
I'd like to tour more of Washington and Oregon which also means California and Idaho. What a shame to have to go through such beautiful states to see more beautiful states. NOT!

When I get back to work after the holidays are over I'm signing up for about 10 days off in August to do a trip around the southwest. I may be looking for a job when I get back but as they say " life won't wait"

Probably do a trip west to Texas, then north through OK, maybe KS or possibly NE before turning back east. May go as far east as the Blue Ridge before heading back south to Birmingham. Tentatively planned for May, 13. Of course, if the world ends next week....

I'm planning a 17 day trip for next April. Across the Kalahari Desert through Botwsana in to Namibia. A few days on the coast, then down the length of the Namib Desert and back home. A triangular route that'll be about 6,000km/3,750mi through some of the least populated places on earth.

Off to Italy again next summer, love the place, through France, Switzerland, over the Alps and a week or so in Italy, taking a couple of mates too this time, introducing them to the delights of overseas travel, once tried you'll never go back, appreciate that's a be tricky for you guys over the pond although I'm sure some would say travelling east to west is like going through several countries !

A return trip to Arkansas, eastern Oklahoma, southern Missouri and Kentucky is in the works for 2013.
The riding is pretty darn good there, with nice scenery.

I want to get out to the southwest next year to visit a buddy in Phoenix. If I'm going to the SW I should probably take the DR and get in some good desert riding. Thinking along these lines...
That's around 7500 miles, maybe a bit aggressive for a 3 week trip. My last trip out west was 7200 miles in 3 weeks and I was constantly on the move. I can take California out of the loop and go straight to Mexico from Phoenix I suppose.
Anyone else thinking about next years trip yet?

Hey Jim,
Adjust your route a little bit and swing through Birmingham and visit Mrs. Irishguy and me. Free place to stay, we'll feed you some good home cooked food and you and I can go dual sporting on the Skyway Motorway in the Talladega National Forrest for a day. Fun stuff on one of the most beautiful trails in the country.

The closest thing we have to the Alps is the Rockies and that's a 4 day ride from here. I'm envious. Maybe some day I can fly and ride the Alps.

I'm planning on doing the Ozark Raid on this trip. Very nice riding out there and looking forward to returning. Are you attending the Raid?

Thanks, I'll try to swing by on the way home. Might even be on the DR so maybe we can take that little dual sport of yours out. All of this is a mute point though if work refuses me 3 weeks off.
