People have been watching too many shows like American Pickers and they think that every piece of junk in the back of their garage is worth big bucks to some collector.
I've got to where I hate that show. They pay way too much for a bunch of crap and it makes everyone else think their crap is worth a bunch too.
I'll tell you what buddy... You just keep your huge barn full of rusty crap and I'll just keep my money.

Not only are those sort of shows making everybody think they're old junk is worth a fortune, but the guys selling new stuff seem to think it's important to list the price they paid for every nut and bolt they had somebody install for them. The adds always read like this:
Super amazing better than new motorcycle for sale. I paid $10,000 for it 3 years ago and had the following installed:
super slip ons - $1200
super FEK - $300
super seat - $400
super decal - $100
super grips - $200
super flyscreen - $400
super pegs - $200
super tune - $100
super bolt kit - $150
These are just the prices for the extras, not including the labor at my super-dealer to install them. In addition, I had new tires installed a year ago ($500) and had the oil and filter changed at the dealer ($100).
Asking $10,000
Please, no low-ballers!!!
This isn't limited to the motorcycle world of course. I see it anywhere people tend to mod their vehicles. Jeeps are another place this sort of add turns up often. Some guy will list the price he paid for every mod on the thing. Bumpers, skid plates, shocks, wheels, tires, wench, storage, grab handles, decals, lift kit, etc.
Come on guys, list the mods, but I don't really care how much you paid for them. They may be worth something on the resale value, but it's not straight addition!
These guys remind me of some people I dealt with when I was selling yachts. I literally had one guy come in to sell an old POS who said 'well, I paid $xxx for it, and here are all the recipts I spent on it in the last 10 years and they add up to $yyy, so I want $xxx+$yyy=$zzz for it. Oh, and we'll have to add on your commission to the asking price as well since I need to pocket $zzz.'

When I divorced, my wife wanted me to not only give her half the appraised eqiuty, but half of every dollar we spent on improvents. Yeah, no. She didn't seem to understand that if I'd sold it, we'd both get the same. Sweat, plywood and paint mean nothing unless they affect the appraised value.

Imagine what you could do with a Saab 9-2 (the 'Saabaru'). The possibilities boggle the mind!
