Little known, interesting tidbit about Wetumpka... Just southwest of the town is one of the largest astroblemes in the world. [That's a "meteor impact crater" for some of our craigslist listers. ]

The reason more people don't know about it is that the meteor impacted a few years ago when most of what is present day Alabama was actually covered in a shallow sea. Because of water erosion and the fact that most of it is now covered in forest, it doesn't stand out like other astroblemes in drier climates.

Here's a picture of what it looks like now. Apparantly the Meteor was travelling at a high rate of speed in the northwesterly direction which is why the "hills" are in a semi-circular pattern on the northwest side:



Here's a picture of what it may have looked like back when DWR302 and Hap were still in elementary school. Keep in mind that cameras were not invented then, so this is just an artist's rendition.



Anyway... Pretty cool stuff. We have been talking about riding our Bonnevilles down there and checking it out, but it's not like the one in Arizona and I don't think there will be a lot to see...
