Dd Recovery
hi all, latest update, OK back its hurting like heck but the fix is according to my surgeon 100% succesfull, that means I can stand upright and straight, there is no deflection either way and I have lost only 1 inch in height, she had to cut through all the major muscle groups in my back and thats causing the pain, they will eventually sort out where they should be and stop hurting so dam much, the metalwork will be permanent because she does not want to tear all the muscles up again to remove it all.
The chest has all healed well, slight bump in the sturnum where it was broken but the collar bones and ribs are fixed evenly, they say I have some scarring in my left lung but nothing to worry about.
The right knee, seems the screws and staples are all there to hold the bone grafts onto the rebiult ligaments, the Surgeon says its good and solid and I am now walking slowly without crutches, the wheelchair is parked in the garage and I am using one crutch for long walks and none round the house, still need the carbon fibre brace.
I have done three sessions of physio and man it hurts, but from them saying no jogging no truck driving and all the other messages of doom I have started jogging in water, am driving my car and have seem my boss who is happy to mod my truck if required so I have proved them all wrong, cos I am going to get fit and back to workin six months, (they say six I am aiming at three).
The only downer is the recomendation not to ride bikes, I am not sure yet, seems when you are lugging two steel plates around clamping your spine, if you fall the plates do not give, however your spine above and below those plates does, the plate ends are overlapping the vertebre above and below the fixed ones, if they flex too far (say in a fall) those overlapping plates will shear through those vertabre causing either paralisis or if it happend at the top eeerrrr death. Wife and kids sort of wants me around, so for now no bikes though today I was looking at a Ural sidecar outfit!!

It's very nice to learn of your continued recovery DD! I wouldn't worry too much about the no riding restriction for now; it will sort itself out over time. Keep up the good work on the recovery (I'm sure there has been quite a bit of physical theapy, which I know is painful and difficult). The fact that you can walk about is a testiment to your commitment to a full recovery.

Hang in there, buddy. You've got to be there for the family, so risky hobbies may have to go. Maybe various RATS could screw on those helmet cameras and send some virtual rides your way.
Take care.

Keep at it. Just think of the next time you go through airport security - the whole place will light up, and you'll be able to just smugly point a thumb over one shoulder...

Maybe not, most surgical plates and screws are titanium and/or stainless steel or ceramic in some cases which will not set off the wands or detectors.
I've got two artificial hips, a 12 inch plate in my right femur and a pacemaker, the pacemaker is the only thing that sets them off. You are supposed to present a card before you go through the detectors quickly and not stop in them and often they will let you around the fixed detectors and wand you to see if anything sets off. Also have to carry a card about the hips and plates for airport security....pia but not a big problem...
I never usually mention the hips but will mention the pacer....you cannot, however, get an MRI with the pacer lest it rip a hole in your chest and screw up the MRI machine big time...
Glad you are on the mend Doodle, sounds pretty serious but you must be in good hands...do yourself a favor man, don't rush the healing...it's good to want to get well quickly but give your bod time to catch up.
Err, if you have any pain pills left...ah...well....hmmm...

Good to hear doodle That you are doing so well. Glad the road to recovery is paved and pothole free for you.
Have you thought about a Can am?
They are nice, easy to maneuver and pretty fast to boot.

Well done Doodle!
I got hit by a Lancia when I was 20. I've got the pins and staples and reconstruction surgeries to prove it! But I wouldn't want to get hurt like that now! So well done, and I hope thing continue to improve.

Hey DD, try not to make a long term decision at this time. Circle a day 6 months ahead on your calendar to think about it then. You will have more info to guide your decision. I was told I would never ride again too. Hang in there man.
